Shared Interest Society

Shared Interest Society We are a community of over 11,000 members investing ethically in a fairer world, together. Join us today: www.shared-interest.com

Our members share our vision of a world where justice is at the heart of trade finance. We form the vital link between UK social investors and fair trade organisations needing finance to improve their livelihoods. Investing in Shared Interest is easy. Anyone over the age of 16 with a UK bank account can open a Share Account for as little as £100. This money is loaned and re-loaned to provide fair finance to farmers and handcraft producers across the globe.

Like Shared Interest, our friends at Food Newcastle are working on multiple fronts through mission-led relationships to create a lasting impact in our communities and agricultural value chains.

Together, we envision a healthier, more sustainable Newcastle, where good food is visible and accessible, food education is embedded and people are empowered to make better food choices and cook with confidence.

As part of Food Newcastle's campaign, local residents are being asked to make their pledges for the future of food in our city – whether that be eating well, wasting less or shopping independent and supporting local.

Take the resident pledge:

In rural Rwanda, our members' ethical investments are helping to create opportunity and prosperity amongst the smallholder farmers of Huyemountaincoffee.

Huye delivers impacts in its community which stretches beyond the generations, with the co-operative funding school fees for members' children and constructing ten water collection points, benefiting around 4,000 people within the Huye and Mbazi districts.

All-the-while, Huye pays its farmers a good wage whilst supporting adaptability to emerging challenges, with training, technical support and income diversification initiatives.

Since 2019, our members have enabled us to provide finance to Huye which has enabled the business to grow, pay farmers and invest in essential facilities.

In our latest quarterly magazine, we explore the impacts of our members' ethical investments within stories of hope and sustainability, featuring Rwandan co-operatives Huyemountaincoffee and Simbi Coffee Investment Ltd, Honduran co-operative CAFESCOR and Peruvian co-operative .

Together, these enterprises support over 8,000 smallholder farmers with fair pay, training, technical support and opportunities to thrive.

At a time when aid budgets across the world are decreasing, and millions of producers face the disproportionate impacts of climate change, Shared Interest offers a way to make a real and lasting difference throughout the global supply chains we depend upon.

Last year alone, our community of over 11,000 members enabled us to lend £57 million to 165 organisations in 47 countries, helping to build fairer futures for around 400,000 farmers and artisans.

In the Alto Mayo region of northern Peru, coffee is more than a crop — it is the backbone of rural life. But today, producers are facing growing uncertainty, as the impacts of climate change bring shifting rainfall patterns, rising temperatures and new threats to crops.

Since 2021, Peruvian coffee producer Valle Grande has turned ethical investment from Shared Interest members into lasting impact on the ground.

In response to the impacts of climate change, Valle Grande is currently implementing a five-year climate adaptation project, which began in 2024. The initiative aims to plant 240,000 timber trees within coffee plots and along farm boundaries, helping to improve shade coverage, soil protection and long-term climate resilience for its farmer members.

UCA SJRC is a union of smallholder coffee co-operatives responding to increasing climate pressures in Nicaragua through practical, on-the-ground changes.

Shared Interest has supported UCA SJRC since 2008.

Speaking about the impact of our finance, General Manager, Griselda Jarquin Lopez, said:

“Access to financing has been key to improving living standards, because it has allowed producers to market their coffee through the organisation.

"As a result, they receive better prices, which translates into improved quality of life and small productive investments.”

In May, Shared Interest participated in the Stakeholder Workshop in Luxembourg hosted by ADA - Appui au Développement Autonome and attended by SSNUP funders from Switzerland, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein, alongside fellow impact investors and partners.

This event served as a great opportunity to meet the SSNUP team, network with other participants and share experiences about Technical Assistance projects, from their creation all the way through to delivery.

We look forward to working with SSNUP to deepen our impact in the coming years.
