Freelance Opportunity: Web Designer

The Byker Community Archive is a resident-led initiative dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of the Byker Estate, an internationally renowned example of participatory architecture. Byker’s unique heritage regularly attracts academics, students, and visitors from around the globe.

Project Scope:

- Develop a user-friendly website with integrated e-commerce functionality.

- Website content must meet at least W3C Single A accessibility standard.

- Ensure seamless integration of the existing catalogue management system.

- Provide ongoing maintenance to ensure optimal performance and usability.

Budget: £5,000 total (design + maintenance).
Deadline: 1st June 2026.

Northern Cultural Projects will soon get access to almost 1,000 digital images of Byker, reaching back to its original Redevelopment, held in the collections of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in London, to help with identifying people, places and events. This will enable RIBA to make them accessible through their online catalogue RIBAPIX and allow us to use them for our Byker Community Archive exhibitions, publications and merchandise.

Great to meet young people from Regeneration Brainery in Byker + Karbon Homes Homes yesterday. They were given insights into housing, construction and regeneration industries, and found out about some of the community projects currently in planning on the estate.

After 2 years of planning and fundraising, refurb work will begin soon and we're hoping to open the archive in June.

Northern Cultural Projects CIC has secured a £240,186 grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and £36,488 match funding from Karbon Homes, to see one of the hobby rooms on the Byker estate transformed into an archive. Our goal is a community living archive: one that captures not only the history of Byker’s buildings and landscapes, but also the lived experiences of its people, past and present.
