As Volunteers’ Week draws to a close, we want to give a huge shoutout to our incredible volunteers.

This month alone, they’ve contributed 250 hours helping us support the community through our Community Launderette, Laundry Run, and Silver Lining Socials.

We simply couldn’t do it without their time, kindness, and dedication — thank you for everything you do!

During Volunteers' Week we would like to recognise the hard work of Shine On's Launderette Assistants, Judith and Laurance.

Judith and Laurance help us to provide a weekly Laundry Run service in the East End of Newcastle. They also support Nicola, the Launderette Manager, with the day-to-day tasks in the Launderette.

Volunteers are essential to many Shine On services, like our monthly Silver Lining Socials. Our volunteers help people feel welcome and comfortable - as well as helping with refreshments, and running activites and quizzes.

We were lucky enough to get a visit from Volunteer Vik, pictured with Harry, one of the regulars who attends our socials. Harry told us about the social and the people who help run it:

“My sister Sylvia and myself like to come here because everyone is so helpful and pleasant.”

We’re delighted that a generous grant from local funder LGA_Foundation will help secure the future of our Silver Lining Social — and even better, allow us to expand from one session to two every month! 💙

The Silver Lining Social is a welcoming, dementia-friendly space where older people can enjoy companionship, games, entertainment, lunch and refreshments in a relaxed and friendly environment. We also provide free transport to help make the sessions as accessible as possible.

Over the past year, the group has grown from just 8 attendees to more than 24 people every month, with new faces joining us all the time. For many who attend, this is their only regular social outing, so we know just how important these connections are.

From September, we’ll also be launching a second social at the Lighthouse Project in Byker, where we hope to bring generations together through activities with local children and young people.

A huge thank you to the LGA Foundation for supporting the Silver Lining Social — we can’t wait to welcome even more people in the months ahead! ✨
