Active Strokes North East

Active Strokes North East ASNE is a charity that supports stroke survivors and their families living in and around Newcastle upon Tyne. Our preferred contact method is via. email.

We aim to help survivors maximise their recovery, take control of their lives and regain as much independence as possible. Through our informal and friendly weekly gym and pool based exercise sessions we try to limit the effects of stroke. We aim to increase self-confidence, mental wellbeing and reduce social isolation by providing a friendly place to meet. All sessions are free and taking part in

activities is not compulsory. At our drop-in session you can meet and socialise with other stroke survivors over a cup of coffee/tea and biscuits. We are based at the East End Pool in Byker, Newcastle and welcome stroke survivors, carers and their families living in and around the local area. Please view the photo album called 'ASNE Weekly Activities' to get an idea of what we do.

Interesting and good to know.

We're excited to confirm that Newcastle Hospitals has been confirmed as the UK's new National Centre for Neurotechnology and Neurorestoration.

In collaboration with Newcastle University, we'll support research and use of the latest technologies aimed at understanding the brain, restoring function in people with neurological disabilities - such as Parkinson's and limb paralysis - and improving health.

The centre will be the first UK facility dedicated to clinical trials using pioneering neurotechnologies, with a focus on implanted devices placed in or near the brain and nervous system.

This will provide people living with neurological conditions with safe access to the latest clinical trial opportunities using the most current technologies under development. Having a dedicated national centre will support a step-change in how the health service can deliver studies and also adapt quickly to support innovation.

Mr Akbar Hussain, clinical director of the centre and functional neurosurgeon at Newcastle Hospitals, said:

“We are entering a new era in treating disorders of the brain and nervous system.

“In Newcastle we have a track record of successful clinical trials in this specialist field and I’m excited to be involved in taking this to the next level.

“The centre will allow us to strengthen and grow our capacity and skills to meet demand and will mean we can pave the way for a future standard of care in neurological disorders, allowing more life-changing treatments to be brought to patients.”

It is getting near the festive period and I want to inform you about how our sessions are affected.

Our last session of this year will be a pool session on Tuesday 16th December.

Our first session of the New Year will also be a pool session on Tuesday 13th January.

FYI: POOL SESSION START TIME

It has become apparent that the recent change in pool session start time from 10.15 to 10.30 was a mistake by the East End Pool management.

So with immediate effect our start time will be 10am.

The General Manager has asked me to pass on his apologies for the issue.

The thought of having another stroke is a terrifying prospect. But this research, if implemented across the UK, could significantly reduce the likelihood of recurrent strokes and cardiovascular events for some survivors.

Aspirin is a medication frequently used by stroke survivors to lower their risk of recurrent stroke.

As a blood thinner, it makes blood less sticky and helps prevent the formation of blood clots. But a recent study has found an already established alternative, Clopidogrel, to be more effective at achieving the same outcome, with no added risk.

The analysis of nearly 29,000 patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) found that clopidogrel was better than aspirin in preventing serious heart and stroke events, without increasing the risk of major bleeding.

Because both medications are widely available, the findings have the potential to influence clinical guidelines worldwide and improve patient outcomes.

FYI: Carolyn Chambers, PhD Student at Northumbria University, is looking for stroke survivors to take part in a cycling study.

It will involve 2 visits to Coach Lane Campus, firstly where you will use an indoor bike with a virtual environment on a monitor screen, and then secondly to come and talk about your experiences with other participants in the group.

Research visits are due to start towards the end of this month and continue to November.

If you would like to find out more, please contact Carolyn (cc'd here) for further information on how to take part.
