For Learning Disability Week and this year’s theme ‘Do You See Me?’, we’re sharing stories that celebrate the people we support.

At our Hub@Parkhead Day Centre in Ashington, members really enjoy sharing their hobbies and interests. So, when Harry suggested trying folk music, it wasn’t long before it became a regular favourite.

Now, those sessions have led to an exciting opportunity, with Harry and his friends set to perform at the Headway Come On Down Festival later this year — a chance to be seen, heard and appreciated.

Vicki recently moved into our Independent Supported Living Service, where she’s supported to do the things she loves. Friendly and outgoing, she shared happy memories of the rose garden at her family home, inspiring staff to help her create one of her own. Her favourite rose, ‘Proper Job’, takes pride of place – a name that perfectly reflects her approach to everything.

As well as spending time at Journey Enterprises, Vicki is also a valued volunteer at our Alan Shearer Activity Centre, where her enthusiasm brightens the day for everyone she meets.

After a busy week, her rose garden offers a peaceful place to relax and recharge – a space that’s truly her own.

As part of this year’s and its theme ‘Do You See Me?’, we’re sharing stories from across our disability services that celebrate the people we are proud to support.

Dan is a Newcastle United season ticket holder and never misses an opportunity to see his beloved NUFC play at St. James' Park. With the right support from our staff at Alan Shearer Specialist Residential Home, Dan gets to every match and enjoys his favourite kebab on the way home, too.

For Dan, football is a big part of his life. Having the right support in place means he can keep doing something he enjoys and that matters to him.

Next week is and we’ll have lots of stories to share, but we couldn’t wait to show how much Rachel and Dan thoroughly enjoyed the choir at The Glasshouse International Centre for Music last night 💚

This World Environment Day, we’re celebrating the small but meaningful steps being taken across our services to care for the environment and encourage others to join us.

Across St Cuthbert’s Care, our outdoor spaces from small urban gardens to the woodland and grounds at the Alan Shearer Centre offer the people we support places to enjoy, shape and care for nature.

At St Catherine’s nursing home, staff are re-purposing a raised bed into a low-level rockery, helping residents take part in gardening while improving views across the garden, especially for those less able to spend time outdoors.

At our children’s homes, young people are also getting involved, with one young man even building a bird box from scratch to support local wildlife.

We’re also hugely grateful to our gardening volunteers, particularly at the Alan Shearer Centre, whose work helps care for the natural environment and its wild visitors, including foxes and deer.

This work has also supported our nationally recognised environmental accreditation.

Gill Ennis, Director of Compliance, said:

“Achieving independent recognition in the first year of our environmental plan reflects the shared commitment across our services to care for our environment and the spaces we all enjoy.”

World Environment Day reminds us that small, everyday actions can grow into lasting, positive change 🌍

Every week The Hub at Parkhead Diane brings energy, fun and a real sense of community through her dance classes, helping to promote a healthy lifestyle in a way that feels accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

But her impact doesn’t stop there…

Through her Fit for Charity classes, Diane has raised an amazing £20,000 to support the Hub and our wider disability services.

“The Hub is such a special place. I love being part of it — seeing the smiles every Tuesday makes it all worthwhile.” Diane, Volunteer

During Volunteer Week, we’re so proud to celebrate volunteers like Diane who go above and beyond to make a difference.

Every week at Holy Cross, something special happens.

Our lunch club, run entirely by volunteers, brings people together over a delicious homemade meal, great company and, of course, a game or two of bingo!

It’s not just about the food (although that’s always a highlight), it’s about connection, laughter and feeling part of a community.

During Volunteer Week, we want to say a huge thank you to the incredible volunteers who make this happen.

🎉Over £2500 Raised for St Cuthbert's Care & GNAAS 🎉

We ended last term with a wonderful Easter market to raise money for our Lenten charities, including St Cuthbert’s Care and the Great North Air Ambulance Service.

We had over 50 different stalls, all ran by our students, ranging from bake sales to tombolas, our Ecocommittee’s ‘grow your own fruit and veg’ to ‘hook a duck!’

Every student in Year 7-12 had the opportunity to visit and spend some pocket money on a good cause.

The market raised over £2500, which is a phenomenal amount!

Just before the half-term holiday, we welcomed Nicola Milne from St Cuthbert’s Care into school to present the cheque to her. Well done to all involved on such an achievement.
