For many young men, spending an evening listening to music, socialising and enjoying a night out with friends is a normal part of life. For Dan, who lives at our Alan Shearer Specialist Residential Home, it is no different.

A keen music fan who loves getting out and about, Dan recently enjoyed a memorable evening at nightclub Digital, accompanied by Residential Care Officer Danny.

The pair headed into the city to attend a country music-themed event, where Dan was able to immerse himself in the atmosphere, enjoy the music and meet new people 🤠

Manager Claire said: "Dan had a brilliant time. The staff couldn't have been more welcoming and he was even invited to join a hen party that was there that night. He was absolutely buzzing when he got back."

At Alan Shearer Specialist Residential Home, support is tailored around each person's individual interests, choices and goals. Whether that's attending football matches, enjoying live music, spending time with friends or trying new experiences, the focus is on helping people live the lives they want to lead.

It was a musical visit with a difference for residents living in our St Catherine’s nursing home when and eight-piece ukulele band turned up to entertain them.

From traditional local songs like Blaydon Races and Fog on the Tyne which encouraged everyone to join in and sing along to the brilliant band giving a ukulele twist to Elvis Presley’s Hound Dog, the musical performance brought plenty of fun, toe-tapping and laughter to our home.

However, the highlight of the afternoon may very well have been the band’s performance of Whip Crack Away featuring one of the band dressed up as if riding on horseback!

“It had me crying with laughter,” said Ann.

There were smiles, laughter and plenty of reasons to celebrate as members, families, staff and supporters came together to mark the 30th anniversary of The Hub@Parkhead in Ashington.

For 30 years, The Hub at Parkhead has been a place where adults with learning disabilities can develop new skills, build confidence, make lasting friendships and enjoy being part of their community. Today, more than 40 members attend the service each week.

The anniversary celebrations were officially opened by Ian Lavery MP and included games, music, dancing and a special awards ceremony recognising members' achievements and contribution to life at The Hub.

Nic Gilbert, Chief Executive of St Cuthbert's Care, said:

"For 30 years, The Hub@Parkhead has been changing lives. We are incredibly proud of all that has been achieved and grateful to our members, families, staff, volunteers and supporters who have made The Hub such a special place."

As The Hub@Parkhead enters its fourth decade, it remains committed to helping adults with learning disabilities learn new skills, build friendships and live active, fulfilling lives.

Happy Hands bring comfort and laughter 😊

It was great to welcome back Zoe from Happy Hands SEND Massage whose specialist SEND massage therapies left two of our Alan Shearer Centre members very content indeed.

Against the calming underwater-themed backdrop of our Immersive Room, Matthew, who lives at our Specialist Residential Home, enjoyed a relaxing massage session accompanied by soothing music. Alongside him, regular member Tristan especially enjoyed the gentle tapping movements designed to mimic raindrops, finding them both relaxing and amusing.

“SEN massage therapy helps with a wide range of disabilities,” said Zoe from Happy Hands. “Helping with mobility often reduces unwanted behaviours but provides so much more.”

A Huge Thank You to British Gas Volunteers 💙

Over the next four weeks, we're delighted to welcome a team of volunteers from British Gas to the Alan Shearer Centre

The volunteers will be dedicating their time and skills to a range of projects across the site, including planting flowers, improving our gardens, clearing and enhancing the woodland walk, decorating areas of the centre, building new features and helping to create even more welcoming outdoor spaces for everyone who visits.

Their support will make a real difference to our members, families and visitors, helping to keep the centre looking its best and ensuring outdoor areas remain accessible and enjoyable for all.

We're incredibly grateful for their commitment, enthusiasm and willingness to get involved. We look forward to sharing updates and photos of the projects as they progress over the coming weeks.

Thank you, British Gas, for choosing to support the Alan Shearer Activity Centre and the people who use our services. 💙

Roars, Laughter and Plenty of Fun!

Members from our service The Hub at Parkhead recently enjoyed a fantastic day out to Heighley Gate Garden Centre where they took on the challenge of the Dinosaur Crazy Golf course 🦖

The dinosaur-themed adventure was a huge hit, with everyone enjoying the chance to put their putting skills to the test while navigating their way around the prehistoric obstacles. There was plenty of laughter, friendly competition and some impressive shots along the way!

The trip provided a wonderful opportunity to get out and about, spend time with friends and create lasting memories together.

A great day was had by all, and we can't wait for our next adventure! ⛳

There was plenty of fun, laughter and delicious food on the menu recently as residents at Holy Cross Care Home in Sunderland enjoyed a hands-on pizza-making session 🍕

Residents rolled up their sleeves and got creative, choosing their favourite toppings and building their very own personalised pizzas. The activity sparked lots of conversation and laughter, with many residents sharing memories of cooking for family and enjoying favourite meals over the years.

The aroma of freshly baked pizza soon filled the home as everyone's creations made their way into the oven. Once ready, residents gathered together to enjoy their homemade treats.

Activities like these are a wonderful way to bring people together, encouraging creativity, social interaction and new experiences while creating special memories. Judging by the smiles around the table, the pizza making session was a huge success and one that residents thoroughly enjoyed.

Cooling Down with an Ice Cream 🍦

Members at our Alan Shearer Centre recently enjoyed a fantastic social, bringing together creativity, friendship and of course some delicious treats.

With the summer weather in full swing, members had the opportunity to cool down with ice creams from Browne's Café while spending time with friends and taking part in arts and crafts activities in our art room 🎨

One highlight of the day was seeing member Arianna showcase her artistic talents by creating a wonderful ice cream artwork using cotton wool and card.
