The Sunday Lunch club tried a new direction for its January meeting. Not the usual Sunday roast - this time it was an indian curry at Dabbawall in High Bridge. Great food, great company (of course) and a good time was had by all.

Today was the first meeting of our new Yoga group where members were guided skillfully through various exercises by Roz our highly experienced teacher. The group is a mix of experienced and those new to yoga and involved the use of a chair as well as mats for those who felt comfortable. Fancy making music in a group setting?

Newcastle u3a will be starting three new groups in the autumn, if there is enough interest. They are Guitar Beginners, Skiffle Group and Ukulele Beginners. Why not contact us on our website if you are interested.

Because the Guitar Beginners and Skiffle Groups don’t exist yet, how they develop and the repertoire they play will depend on the members who join the groups. Exciting times!

We already have a Ukulele Band, so the Ukulele Beginners will be working towards bringing its members up to a standard where they feel happy about joining the band.

Guitarists please note, the venue is not suitable for amplified instruments, so I’m afraid you’ll have to leave your Les Pauls and Stratocasters at home, sorry.

If you are interested, please contact us via our website:

Here is a report from Catherine, on just one aspect of the National u3a Festival, held at York at the weekend.

Juke Box Jury! A really fun 90 minutes of playing this famous TV game of the 50s and 60s. There was a juke box on the right. It's actually a cardboard cutout with a very lifelike picture of a juke box on the front. We got the cue to applaud when the light went on and the jury's votes were recorded on the 6 lights to the right of the picture.

If there was a tie in the jury's votes, the audience got to vote whether a piece of music had been a hit or a miss in its time.

Sandi and Liz have photos I took of them so watch this space!
Maybe we could have this game as an activity at the monthly meeting or as part of a study day etc.

Here is the latest u3a Friends Newsletter, hot off the press from National. I can't see how to post documents to a FB page, but this link should work:

As this u3a Friends newsletter reaches you, hundreds of members will be arriving at u3a Festival 24, which will be the largest meeting of u3a members in the movement's history. For me, Festival 24 embodies the spirit of the u3a movement; members sharing their time and skills with others. This is the...
