Thanks to everyone who came along to our 2026 friends and family picnic yesterday.

The day began with torrential rain in some places, but we were so lucky that the skies cleared and we were able to enjoy chatting, playing and eating delicious food in warm sunshine!

Make your voice heard about community life in the UK

We know WI members are at the heart of our communities up and down the UK, Wales, and the islands; but too often our voices aren't heard or heeded by those making decisions or shaping policy.

That's why NFWI is supporting the National Conversation - one of the biggest listening surveys in a generation, asking one simple question: what kind of country and community do you want to live in?

It's independent, run by Nuffield College, University of Oxford. It's anonymous. And it takes just 12 minutes. The answers will shape the work of the Independent Commission on Community & Cohesion, co-chaired by Sir Sajid Javid and Jon Cruddas.

We're supporting the National Conversation because the WI's community deserves to be heard. Please take part today.

There’s no formal meeting for us in August, instead we have our friends and family picnic.

You can tell from these photos how engrossed we all were with paper quilling at last night’s July meeting!

Thank you Helen for putting it all together for us, there are definitely some quilling converts!

We were spoiled with refreshments too - there was a chocolate cake from Margaret and a key lime pie and Victoria sponge from Nicky. They were all delicious, and there were some very happy families waking up to leftovers this morning.

However, we also had to say a huge thank you , but sad goodbye to Rebecca, our Treasurer. She has juggled work and family commitments with her WI role and shown immense patience guiding us in all matters financial. We’re going to miss her hugely, and we’re very grateful to Chrissie for stepping in.

Our June meeting is usually a walk, and last night we were joined by Ruth, a city guide, who really opened our eyes to the different memorials and places of interest around Haymarket and the university.
Although most of us walk through the centre regularly there are many memorials we hadn’t noticed, and Ruth shared the fascinating stories behind them.
Of course we needed refreshments, and Jackie spoilt us with 3 different delicious sweet treats!
