Whickham Chase Park Gardeners

14/10/2026

The volunteer gardening team at Chase Park spent this morning planting up the two flower beds outside the Pavilion buildings. Many hours of work have gone into getting these beds to this stage - digging them over 3 times to remove w**d roots, 500L of compost dug in, and a load of watering! 😅
Thank you to Oaklands Garden Centre, Swalwell for the plants and Planting Up Whickham for the donation of geraniums. A few more plants to go in and edges to tidy up, but almost there!
The new landscaping was made possible with Pride in Place funding.
If you'd like to have a go at gardening, Whickham Chase Park Gardeners welcome new volunteers on our Wednesday morning sessions! 🥰🌿🪻🌼🌞🌹🐝🦋🌱

Busy morning for Whickham Chase Park Gardeners, edging the grass at the sunken garden flower bed and a spot of w**ding. The plants are growing well in this cooler weather 🌱🪻🏵️🌸🌹🌞🌧️🦋🐜🐞
We dug over the large flower beds again, after the sun had dried them out. Thank you to the Gateshead Council team, who chipped up some branch offcuts, and put them straight onto the beds to minimise the w**ds

Thanks to the rain and cooler weather, the sunken garden border plants are starting to grow and produce some colour. All the weeks of watering by Whickham Chase Park Gardeners helped them get their roots down, and now nature has taken over! 😍🌨️🌞🪻🌸🏵️🍂🌹🌳🐞🦋🐝

This morning, Whickham Chase Park Gardeners tackled the w**ds on the compacted sloping bed by the pavilion toilet block. It now matches last week's efforts on the other slope! Won't be long before they are both planted up and looking tidy 🏵️🌷🌻🪻🍃🌳🐞🦋🐝

Whickham Chase Park Gardeners have had a busy week in the park. Finally, the rain has arrived to green everything up and the sunken garden bed has started to grow and flower! We also made a start on the sloping beds outside the pavilion, which will soon be planted up and looking lovely. This area is part of a funded project by the volunteer gardeners.
Gateshead Council have done fantastic work this week in Chase Park, cutting hedges, pruning trees, w**ding and general maintenance. You can certainly see the difference!
The pavilion building and cafe is open Monday 12-3pm & Wednesday 12.30-3pm. Come and support the volunteers there from Chase Park Community Group, who are improving the facilities.

Chase Park Whickham has again received a Green Flag Award this year, as well as Heritage Site status for the second year running.
Whickham Chase Park Gardeners volunteer alongside two other voluntary groups: Whickham Bowling Club & Chase Park Community Group. Together, we keep the park accessible for the public, facilities open and the bowling green maintained.

The groups are always welcoming new volunteers to help with tasks around the park. If you love gardening, come to visit our friendly team on a Wednesday between 10-11.30am, and see what we do.
Whickham Bowling Club welcome new members - Saturday is an opportunity for anyone to come to the pavilion to try their hand at bowling. Just turn up and join in!

Whickham Chase Park Gardeners have been busy this morning, putting wood chip on the new planted areas, and also on the long flower beds near Millfield Rd.
Trying to keep the w**ds at bay is a full time job in the summer!! 🌞
