We’re so proud to be celebrating Mr Asif Hasan today, as he heads to The Pride of Britain Awards to receive a very well-deserved Lifetime Achievement Award ❤️👏

For over 30 years, Asif has dedicated his career to caring for children with complex heart conditions at Newcastle's Freeman Hospital , performing thousands of open-heart operations and helping make Newcastle a world-leading centre for children’s heart surgery and transplantation.

Many Chuf families will know just how much his skill, care and compassion have meant over the years and we’ve also seen Asif support Chuf beyond the operating theatre too, including taking on several Great North Swims to raise vital funds for Heart Heroes. 🏊❤️

This recognition could not be more deserved! From everyone at Chuf, congratulations Asif – we’ll be cheering you on tonight! 👏🏻

📺 You can watch Asif receive his award on the Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards, airing Thursday 22nd October at 8pm on ITV and ITVX.

Over a 30-year career as head of Paediatric Cardiac Surgery at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle, Mr Asif Hasan has transformed children's heart surgery and performed around 400 heart transplants.

Known for taking on the most complex, high-risk cases that other hospitals turned away, he gave thousands of children a second chance at life. Beyond his own operations, Mr Hasan pioneered vital surgical techniques like the 'bootlace closure' and dedicated his career to training the next generation of UK heart surgeons.

🌟 Monthly Fundraiser Spotlight 🌟

This month, we’re celebrating three incredible groups of fundraisers who have raised a combined £4,997.20 to support our Heart Heroes and their families! ❤️

⚽ James Taylor brought Horton Shankhouse FC and Newcastle's Jet2 team together for an incredible charity football match, raising an amazing £2,150 through the game, a raffle and donations. Although the Jet2 team didn’t quite secure the result they hoped for, with Horton taking an 8-0 victory, their fundraising was certainly a winner!

James chose to support Chuf because of his connection to the charity through his daughter, Fleur, who was treated at the Freeman Hospital. A huge thank you to James, Fleur, both teams and everyone who made the day possible!

🏃 Team ELF! Evie, Louis, Finley, Mam and Dad, took on the 10km Families on Track relay and raised a fantastic £920 for Chuf.

This challenge was especially important to the family, as Finley spent nine months in hospital following treatment for his congenital heart defect, allowing them to see first-hand the difference Chuf makes to children and families. We’re delighted that Finley is now doing amazingly well and so grateful to the whole family for their support.

🏆 Wansbeck Wanderers Walking Football Club also chose Chuf as one of their charity partners for their fantastic Walking Football Festival, which raised an incredible £1,927.20!

With teams, volunteers, a raffle, tombola, cake stall and plenty of community spirit, it was a brilliant day from start to finish. Thank you to everyone who took part, donated or helped to make the festival such a wonderful success.

To all our amazing fundraisers, thank you for helping us continue to bring Chuf magic to Heart Heroes and their families. 🫶

We’re looking for people with relevant lived experience to help shape a study exploring how nature can affect the health and wellbeing of children in hospital with heart conditions.

Your views will help inform how Freeman Hospital can better support children and their families.

Taking part involves:
• Reviewing a small number of forms and sharing your feedback
• Joining one online workshop at 6:30pm on either Friday 16th October or Friday 23rd October

Making music, creating moments of joy! ❤️🎶

At Chuf, we’re proud to fund a Nordoff Robbins Music Therapist on the Children’s Heart Unit every week, helping children and young people discover the joy and benefits of music during their hospital stay. Music Therapy can play an important role in recovery, offering opportunities for creativity, connection and achievement. 🎹🎸

Each week, our Heart Heroes look forward to seeing Scarlett, our Music Therapist, trying new instruments, forming bands and exploring different kinds of music.
The sessions are to support Heart Heroes whilst they’re on the heart unit, with activities adapted to each child’s individual needs. ❤️

🎹 In this lovely clip, Heart Hero Scarlett is learning to play Hakuna Matata on the piano! After not playing for several years, she worked incredibly hard to learn the song and even enjoyed a little duet along the way.

Moments like these, show how Music Therapy can bring confidence and creativity to children and families on the Children’s Heart Unit.
