The Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne (SANT) is the country’s oldest antiquarian society outside of London, founded in 1813. For nearly two centuries, through our meetings and publications, the Society has encouraged a deeper understanding of the history and archaeology of north-eastern England. Our archaeological collections are on display on the Great North Museum and archives held by the Woodhorn Trust.

What better way to spend a summer evening!

Society members and friends have enjoyed a sunny walk through the Ouseburn with Mike Greatbatch, exploring the lives of those buried at the Ballast Hill Burial Grounds, to the site where we heard from Dr Myra Giesen, Newcastle University lead of the ongoing project to rediscover, record and reimagine the Ballast Hills Burial Ground.

All ending in the lovely Brinkburn Brewery with special performances from Beneath This Ground - a collaboration between poet Harry Gallagher and folk musicians Marina Dodgson and Maurice Condie, which begins to tell the story of Ballast Hills Burial Ground in words and music.

Fabulous.
