It Happens Here, Newcastle

It Happens Here, Newcastle It Happens Here aims to support all survivors and allies of sexual violence on campus through campaigns, socials, self defence, self care and support groups.

It Happens Here Newcastle is a multi-award winning society. We support and campaign for allies and survivors of sexual violence. We hold the University and wider society to account to recognise gendered violence and the intersecting layers of misogyny and sexual violence. We unapologetically campaign for these issues and our voices to be heard. We recognise that sexual violence disproportionately

affects those in marginalised groups. We provide the support that the university fails to provide for survivors. We advocate for a fully inclusive, intersectional, accessible and feminist approach in our work. We are determined to prevent sexual violence through education and we strive for policy reform. We believe that each individual is entitled to an education at University free from sexual violence. We believe you. Join our community. membership only Β£5. We want to take a moment to appreciate this years Reclaim the Night, wow.

Thank you so much to everyone who came and supported the cause, as always solidarity will overcome silence.

Institutions like to conceal the voices of survivors, whether that be shrouded in a culture of victim blaming, through simply not believing them or through a lack of action towards perpetrators. Reclaim the Night amplified the voices of survivors and allies and called for action, we showed institutions that their inaction to deal with these issues is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

Our collective voice can and will be listened too. We will not be silenced.

Today marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. 85 women have lost their lives to gendered violence so far this year and we believe it’s important we say their names.

To remember them all we stood in a line and as each name was read out we marked a hand. This banner will be held in the Reclaim the Night march tomorrow, we hope it sends a crucial message to everyone watching.

Today raised an important question, when will this end? When will we be able to carry a blank piece of fabric, instead of one remembering 85 dead women? Enough is enough, we need to see active change now.

We also held a minutes silence at the end to remember the names of people not on the list who have also been lost to gendered and sexual violence, people who are still very much in our memory ❀️

Our 'Hope Walls' as a sign of hope in sexual violence prevention 🀍

Our volunteers sometimes get quite emotional reading the hope wall at the end of a workshop. It can be extremely moving to know young people are going to help in tackling an issue so close to our hearts - sexual violence.

We believe and always will, that education is absolutely key in embedding preventative attitudes. Our workshops provide young people with the tools to make a difference.

We believe education is power, and young people deserve that power πŸ“£

Join us to Reclaim the Night ✊

On the 26th November join us on the streets, making our voices heard in ending gendered violence. Enough is enough, lets make a stand πŸ—£

We will also be hosting, in collaboration with , a banner making session in the students union beforehand (more info to come) 🎨

This is an inclusive event - our definition of women includes anyone who self identifies as such. All genders are welcome to join but misogyny, racism, transphobia, ableism and physical violence are not welcome 🚫

We also recognise the intersectional nature of sexual and gender based violence and the different layers of oppression marginalised groups face. We want to ensure that we include disabled, LGBTQ+, BAME, foreign, refugee, working-class, homeless, and otherwise vulnerable people ❀️

A full march route map and accessibility information will be posted soon.
