National Energy Action

National Energy Action National Energy Action (NEA) is the leading fuel poverty charity in the UK.

NEA began over 40 years ago when students at Durham University established a group of volunteers to install loft insulation in the homes of elderly local people. Their experiences led them to realise that there was a huge problem of people living in cold and unhealthy homes. Subsequently, working with Newcastle City Council, this project was replicated on a wider scale by putting together differen

t funding streams to develop community insulation projects. On 18 May 1981, Neighbourhood Energy Action was formally launched as a development programme of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations. Since then NEA has grown into a national charity which employs almost 70 staff across sites in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Our actions have brought real social change, enabling millions of vulnerable householders to access grants and assistance to help them heat their homes affordably; and ensuring that fuel poverty is now a key public policy concern.

Yesterday, the Warm Homes APPG and Climate APPG hosted a drop-in event for MPs, looking at the impact of the energy crisis on consumer energy. We spoke to MPs about the cost of living and impact on energy advice, the best options for support for the coming winter and building our renewable capacity to help insulate households from future price shocks.

It was an important chance to explore how we support households now who are in fuel poverty and ensure they remain protected well into the future.

It was great to see Catherine McKinnell MP, Pippa Heylings MP, Hannah Spencer MP, Grahame Morris MP, Uma Kumaran MP, Gurinder Josan MP, Andrew George MP, Gideon Amos MP and Paul Waugh MP. As well as staff from Fleur Anderson MP and Lee Pitcher MP's office.

Thanks to Groundwork, Citizens Advice, Nesta, E3g and Uplift for their support.

Thank you RenewableUK for inviting us to be the charity partner for Global Offshore Wind 2026!

We began the day with a pre‑conference 5km route, with participants running or walking together in support of ending fuel poverty.

Throughout the day, we had powerful conversations at our exhibition stand. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to speak with us. Together, we can help build a clean energy system that includes and supports households experiencing fuel poverty.

Millions of children are living in cold, mouldy and unhealthy homes. That's why our Training and Education team are working with schools across the UK to tackle the issues impacting young people's health, academic attainment and life chances. We're now launching our 'Fuel Poverty Aware Schools' programme. We'll work with teachers, children and parents at the school, improving knowledge and providing practical support to families. If you're an educator and would like to discuss working in your school, please email [email protected].

This week is . Our Empowered by Energy project builds a self-sustaining support network to embed useful life skills and makes communities more resilient. Without such support, refugees and asylum seekers can quickly find themselves owing hundreds of pounds to an energy supplier they didn’t know they had. The workshops give them the confidence to contact their energy company and get the support they need, take control of their energy bills and join their Priority Services Register.

We've received fantastic feedback from organisations and attendees of these workshops. Find out more about the project here: https://www.nea.org.uk/what-we-do/projects/empowered/

We're pleased to launch a brand-new training course, 'Warm Start, Healthy Futures', to support people working with expectant parents and families with school-aged children.

The course covers the health, educational, and social impacts on the 6 million children across the UK living in fuel poverty. Learners will be able to provide practical energy efficiency advice to their clients and learn more about relevant referral pathways.

If you want to help children growing up in cold and unhealthy homes, you can sign up to join us on Friday 19 June when we run this course for the first time. Find out and register here: https://www.nea.org.uk/training-and-education/training-course-outlines/warm-start-healthy-futures-course/
