Feeding Britain

Feeding Britain There's no place for hunger in the UK. Access to good quality food for all is possible, and essential for a thriving society.

We are an independent charity, established by members of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Hunger, to help put into practice the recommendations set out in the group’s Feeding Britain reports. Our objective is to work towards a hunger-free UK. We are pursuing this objective by working with partners across the country to relieve and prevent hunger, and working for reforms at a national level to reduce the nation’s vulnerability to hunger.

For many families in rural Cornwall, accessing holiday activities and food support isn’t simple. Long travel distances and limited public transport can make it harder for children and families to access food, activities, and support during the school holidays.

Active Cornwall’s Time2Move Holiday Programme is helping tackle these barriers through a hyper-local approach to Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) provision. By working with a wide range of providers across Cornwall, the programme does a lot to reduce barriers to access by bringing free activities and nutritious meals closer to where families already live.

It’s a powerful example of how place-based approaches can strengthen support for children and families across rural communities.

For many living in rural and coastal communities, accessing affordable food isn’t simple. Limited transport links, fewer local shops, higher food supply costs and social isolation can all create barriers to accessing healthy food and wider support services.

The Sheppey Support Bus is helping tackle these challenges by bringing affordable food directly into local communities across the Isle of Sheppey. The bus helps reduce travel barriers while also creating a trusted and familiar community space. Alongside affordable food, people can access advice, workshops, health support, and other wraparound services.

It’s a powerful example of how community-led solutions can make affordable food more accessible and dignified 💚

In the light of last week’s debate on how to protect families’ access to nutritious, affordable food, Feeding Britain is calling for a reformed NHS Healthy Start programme to play a stronger role in supporting households facing rising food costs.

In a recent briefing, Professor Greta Defeyter OBE, Zoe Griffiths (RNutr), and Feeding Britain National Director Andrew Forsey highlight the need to:

• improve take-up through more proactive registration
• expand the range of healthy foods covered by Healthy Start
• increase the weekly allowance to reflect rising food costs

Together, these reforms could help more families access healthy food in a way that is fair, practical, and targeted.

We see every day how food insecurity affects families. Not only at mealtimes, but at the end of the day when everything feels a little heavier. There are over 2 million children facing hunger in the UK right now.

That’s why, as a funded partner, we welcome the renewed partnership between Sainsbury's and Comic Relief. Their new campaign, “Let’s Put Hunger to Bed”, reflects what many families are quietly going through. Their support enables us to continue providing families with dignified, affordable food options and wraparound care, alongside nutritious meals and enriching activities for children during the school holidays.

Together, we’re working toward a future where every child can go to sleep feeling nourished, safe and supported.

Together, we can put hunger to bed.

In this clip from the Feeding Britain podcast, Bob Bevil from Chipping Barnet Foodbank reflects on the importance of lived experience in shaping meaningful change. He discusses the difference between representing people and creating the space for people to speak for themselves, and why listening closely to communities is essential when tackling the root causes of hunger.

In the full episode, Bob joins Beth Saunders and Rachel Cubbin from Wirral Food Bank to explore how foodbanks and referral agencies are working to address the underlying drivers of hunger in their communities. Listen here: https://tr.ee/py2SQQcVHq
