The Powerful Science of Fatherhood 💙

Fatherhood changes everything - including the brain and body. Research shows that when a baby is born, dads go through powerful biological changes that help them bond, nurture and respond to their baby in remarkable ways.

Hormones linked to connection, like oxytocin, increase - strengthening the bond between father and baby. At the same time, other changes help dads become more emotionally attuned, especially during those early, intense weeks.

Even the brain adapts. Studies show that when dads spend time caring for their babies, areas linked to empathy, memory and emotional connection grow and develop.

At Tiny Lives, we see every day just how important this bond is - especially on the Neonatal Unit, where those early moments matter so much. From sitting beside incubators to providing skin-to-skin care, dads play a vital role in their baby’s journey 🧸
This Father’s Day, we celebrate not just the love dads give, but the incredible transformation they go through biologically, emotionally and mentally as they grow into their role.

A gift of £10 could help us continue to support neonatal dads - helping them be there, feel supported, and build those vital early connections.

A huge thank you to our incredible neonatal nurses who came together over the weekend for a fundraising walk along the Northumberland coast 💙

They’ve raised a fantastic £530 to support Tiny Lives and help us continue our work for neonatal families.

We are so grateful to this wonderful team - not only for the care they give on the unit every day, but for going above and beyond in their own time to make such a difference. This kind of compassion and dedication is truly inspiring💫

💛 A Father’s Love 💛

As Father’s Day approaches, we’re sharing a story that captures just how powerful that love can be 🫶

When Jack was born 15 weeks early, weighing just 1lb 12oz, his parents spent days and nights by his side on the Neonatal Unit sitting beside his son, Jack’s dad began writing something he’d never tried before… a poem. A way to process the fear, the love, and everything in between. That poem stayed unfinished for five years - until now.

“I'd never written one before. I don't fully know why I started, it just felt like therapy, a way to get the fear and the love out of my head and onto a page.”

As Jack turns five and continues to thrive, his dad completed it and shared it to raise funds for Tiny Lives, in gratitude for the care and support that helped give their family a future raising wonderful £230✨

“For me and Alison, his birthday is always filled with joy, but also a quiet anxiety that never quite leaves you. Even now, five years on, it feels like a part of us never really left the neonatal ward.”- Liam shared with us.

We are really grateful for Liam sharing his story, his words, and his journey so openly, and for turning it into something that will now help other families walking the neonatal path 💛

💙 Manchester Marathon for Tiny Lives 💙

We are so grateful to our incredible runners who took on the Adidas Manchester Marathon in support of Tiny Lives 🫶

Denis and Alice shared an unforgettable finish, crossing the line hand in hand. Running for their nephew Teddy, they told us:

“We are running the Manchester Marathon for Tiny Lives, who have been an incredible support to our little nephew Teddy and his incredibly strong parents. Teddy was born extremely premature but has been a little fighter and is the cutest cheeky boy!”

Together, they raised over £2,000, helping us continue to support families just like Teddy’s💫

Nicola and Stuart also ran with love and remembrance, completing the marathon in memory of their nephews, Theo and Bambos. Their efforts raised £750 - a meaningful tribute that will make a lasting difference and create a special legacy in their honour.

"It was harder than I thought it would be, but it was an amazing experience. I actually only started running to do the GNR in 2024 for Tiny Lives with my sister Joanna, Theo’s mam. Before the GNR I never would have believed I could run 13 miles never mind 26! Thank you for everything you do. When Theo was born it was such a difficult time for Joanna and Tiny Lives were such a support. I’m really happy that we managed to raise money for Tiny Lives again this time." - Nicola shared.

Every mile run and every pound raised helps us be there for neonatal families, and we want to say thank you to all our runners - you are part of something truly special💛

“Supporting others while worrying inside is strength, too” 💛

Sometimes the quiet strength goes unseen - the smiles, the kindness, the support you give, even when things feel heavy inside.

If this feels like you, please know you’re not alone. At Tiny Lives, we’re here to support you through every step and stand beside you today and every day 🫶

💙 This Father’s Day, support the dads holding it all together. 💙

For many dads on the neonatal unit, days don’t stop when work ends. They rush from meetings, building sites, offices or night shifts - straight to the hospital to sit beside their baby.

When a baby is in neonatal care, dads are often holding a lot at once. They’re worrying about their baby, about their partner’s recovery, and about how to be there for both - all while trying to keep everyday life going.

“A million things were rushing through my head, but I couldn’t ask a single question. I was just trying to keep it together - for her, for our baby - while everything felt completely overwhelming.” – Graeme wrote in his Dad’s Diary which he kindly shared with us

💫 A £10 could help to break down the barriers that make this time even harder.

Tiny Lives offers practical and emotional support to help dads stay present when it matters most, because behind the strength, many dads are trying to cope with overwhelming emotions while holding everything together.

“Everything was happening so fast. There were people everywhere, and we didn’t know what was going on. One minute we were together, the next our baby was taken away. We sat there in shock - not knowing what to say to each other. But no matter what, you just want to stay.”

This Father’s Day, while celebrating cuddles, cards and family time, we are thinking about dads whose arms are still waiting to hold their baby for the first time.

Your kind gift of £10 can help us to be there for neonatal dads. Help a dad be there. Help him feel supported. Help make this Father’s Day count💛

27km Down, 32km to Go – Jackson Hogg Team taking on Challenge for Tiny Lives 🥾

Nine members of our Charity of the Year partner, Jackson Hogg, recently took on the Isaac’s Tea Trail, hiking an amazing 27km to raise money for Tiny Lives.

With sunshine on their side, the team completed the route in just under seven hours - an amazing effort!

So far, they’ve raised a fantastic £2,730 with the second half of their challenge - 32km, still to come later this year ✨

We can’t wait to see them take on the next stage - good luck to the whole team! 💛

💛 Sibling Support Group 💛

After our special afternoon in April, our Sibling Support Group returns this June offering a warm and supportive space for families who have spent time on Ward 35 and experienced loss of their baby - to come together, take part in memory-making crafts and spend time with others who understand 🫶

It’s a chance to connect in your own way - whether that’s sharing experiences, chatting alongside the children as they create, or simply taking a moment to be in a space that feels comfortable and understanding. Our group open to families with children of all ages, no matter how long ago your time on the unit was.

Members of the Senior Nurses team, Sarah and Jane, will be there, along with Fiona, Tiny Lives Family Support Officer, offering a friendly, familiar presence throughout the afternoon.

If you’re thinking of coming along for the first time, you’re very welcome to reach out to them beforehand - they’ll be happy to talk things through and help you feel at ease. You can ring 0191 230 2112 or email [email protected] 💛

We know how quickly summer can fill up ☀️

Plans come together, diaries start to feel busy, and the weeks seem to pass in no time.
If you have some time along the way, we’d love you to join us for some Tiny Lives activities💛

🌿 Our Stay & Play sessions run throughout the summer at The Alan Shearer Activity Centre in Newcastle and booking are now live!

Open to babies from 6 weeks corrected up to 4 years (with siblings up to 8), they’re a chance to spend time with other families who understand, in a relaxed and welcoming space while your little ones play.

There’s lots to enjoy together too - from sensory and immersive rooms to the café, along with access to the hydrotherapy pool (with bookable slots each session).

🎬 In August, we’ll be bringing back Screen on the Green - a special outdoor gathering to come together, relax, and enjoy something a little different as a family (more details coming soon!).

It would be so lovely to see you join us and enjoy some summer moments together 💛

💜 Kangaroo Care Day 2026 at the RVI's Neonatal Unit 💜

We were delighted to celebrate Kangaroo Care Day 2026 with a special coffee morning on the unit, supported by our Family Support Officer, Victoria.

Families came together to spend precious skin-to-skin time with their babies – a simple yet powerful way to support bonding, comfort, and development ✨

The morning was filled with warm conversations over tea and biscuits, opportunities to learn more about kangaroo care, and time to share experiences and support one another.

It was truly heartwarming to see families connecting, learning about the benefits of skin-to-skin, and creating those all-important early memories together.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and made the morning so special 🫶
