Tomorrow at the Star & Shadow Cinema, join us for a special Refugee Week screening of Agnieszka Holland’s GREEN BORDER.

Set on the Polish Belarusian border in 2021, the film follows the lives of refugees, aid workers and border guards caught within a growing humanitarian crisis. As families fleeing conflict attempt to reach safety through dense forests and heavily militarised border zones, impossible choices and moral dilemmas emerge on all sides.

Shot with striking immediacy and compassion, GREEN BORDER offers a powerful and deeply human portrait of one of Europe’s most urgent contemporary issues. Rather than providing easy answers, Holland invites us to witness the realities faced by those trapped between political systems, national borders and the hope of a better future.

A gripping and moving work from one of Europe’s most acclaimed filmmakers.

A massive Thank You to all who donated plants for last Sundays Plant Sale.

Beautifully and carefully presented, with a wide selection delivered, we were truly impressed.

And another massive thank you to all the plant lovers who turned up to buy, clearing everything out in less than two hours.

We raised £529.00 for The Angelou Centre in the West End of Newcastle.

Every year they help hundreds of women and children from Black and minoritised communities recover after experiencing violence, abuse or unfair treatment.

These are the amounts raised from our plant sale the past four years for The Angelou Centre.

This would not have been possible without our own volunteers working hard in advance, and on the day making sure it all worked smoothly.

On Sunday 5 July at the Star & Shadow Cinema, join us for a (very) belated celebration of the 70th birthday of Lars von Trier with the new 4K restoration of his unusual office comedy, THE BOSS OF IT ALL.

If you know Lars von Trier’s films, “comedy” might not be the first word that comes to mind. After all, this is a director who famously claimed that “a film should be like a stone in your shoe”. Yet alongside his reputation as one of contemporary cinema’s great provocateurs, von Trier is also a master of irony who never takes himself too seriously. He delights in exposing hypocrisy, poking fun at genre conventions and satirising the ambitions and absurdities of artists, including himself.

THE BOSS OF IT ALL reveals a lighter side of the filmmaker. A sharp and often hilarious workplace comedy, it showcases the wit and playfulness that run throughout his work, even at its most challenging.

Tomorrow at the Star & Shadow Cinema, SARAFINA!

Today marks 50 years since the Soweto Youth Uprising of 16 June 1976, a defining moment in the struggle against apartheid. Thousands of young people took to the streets to demand equal education and resist the enforced use of Afrikaans in schools. Their courage in the face of violent state repression became a powerful symbol of resistance and helped change the course of South African history.

Released in 1992 and based on Mbongeni Ngema’s acclaimed stage musical, SARAFINA! follows a group of Soweto students whose political awakening unfolds against the backdrop of the uprising. Combining music, dance and drama, the film is a vibrant celebration of youth resistance, solidarity and the fight for freedom, featuring unforgettable performances from Leleti Khumalo, Whoopi Goldberg and Miriam Makeba.

Join us as we remember the young people whose bravery inspired a generation.
