Saturday the 6th June saw the first day of the "Tyneside 2 day regatta" at Paddy Freeman's Park in Newcastle. A damp day and and a smaller entry than in previous years did nothing to spoil the event. A good days sailing and some great banter with old friends made the day its usual special occassion, much looked forward to each year.

Round 3 of this seasons "Straight Running" championship, run today in rather hot conditions. A limited number of catchers and entrants made for a short competition, but none the less a good days sailing. 10 boats sailled and there were some good scores on the board.

Heat 4 of the Radio Steering competition was completed today. 17 entries and an interesting course. 3 clear rounds were acomplished, quite an achievement. The weather for once was great, a novelty on a bank holiday weekend. Despite the recent sun and showers the w**d has stayed away, the blue dye is still doing its stuff !

Todays "Straight Running" heat turned out a little different to what was expected. Between last Wednesday, (when the lake water was crystal clear) and today, a mass of green thread w**d had bubbled to the surface no doubt caused by the recent sunny weather. The lake has no water flow through it, its a giant stagnant birdbath, and so the nutrients from the bread well meaning folks throw into the lake added to the duck poo acts as superb fertilizer for the w**d. We started with a drag rope and weighted net before trying the "Jakes Rake" which was dragged back and forth across the lake, finishing by hand with mesh scoups. We got a lot of the w**d out but there was enough left to cause some issues. Anyway we manged to complete the competition and had a good sail on what was a rather pleaseant sunny day.

Yesterday saw the first round of this years "Straight Running" club competition, albeit a couple of weeks late due to inclement weather and being a bit short on catchers. A bitterly cold morning supported by lashings of hot tea gave way to a sunny afternoon and provided a good days sailing with some decent scores for the first outing of the year. Round 2 will be next Saturday as we get back on schedule with the 2026 season programme.

Round 2 of this seasons Radio Steering competition took place today. It's still very cold and there was a sharp wind which had a number of lighter boats crabbing across the course. This particular course was rather challenging due to a miriad of tight turns, a mental challange for competitors trying to remember where you were up to.

Yesterday was the season opener, the Albert Foxton Trophy radio Control regatta. With "Storm Dave" due late in the day we were keen to make a sharp start on what turned out to be a bitterley cold day, though at least the winds were very light. Plenty of hot tea kept the day on course. A good turnout with 6 clear rounds with the winner eventually decided by running the course in the reverse direction. We also had a visit from fellow modellers with their "Flying Boat", which is currently set up purely as a model boat due the legal requiremnts of Radio Control in flight. An interesting model indeed.

2026 has started like every year, with a lake cleaning session. Less leaves for some reason this year, but much more in the way of wood, branches, twigs etc, which are awkward to deal with. With the lake cleaned out, attention turned to the bank sides which were de-w**ded, and then we finished off by clearing a lot of branches which had been left scatteed in the bushes at the back of the lake after what we assume were pruning sessions. Bitter experience shows that it will all end up in the lake at some point in time. A hard days graft but as usual the lake looked really tidy afterwards.
Gratefull thanks to Newcastle City Council parks Dept for the supply of the skip.

Saturday the 27th of September saw the final regatta of the season, the North East Coast radio steering event. This was held over from the previous week due to the biblical rainfall of that Saturday. On the plus side, the water level in the lake has come up a couple if inches. The course was quite tight and proved to be very challenging with no clear rounds. A quiet end to what has been an interesting and absorbing season

Our final visit of the Season to South Shields for their clubs annual Invitation day. Also our final outing for the "Straight Runners" due to a total lack of water out our home lake in Newcastle. The weather held off and we enjoyed a superb days sailing with a tricky wind that ebbed and flowed to frustrate most of us. Our thanks to our hosts for a great event and a warm welcome. Already looking forward to next seasons first visit. Sorry there are not many photo's, but too busy sailing and catching.
