When Ibrahim* arrived in the UK from Syria as a young child, he and his family had to leave behind their home, friends and everything that was familiar to them.

Adjusting to life in a new country wasn't always easy, but through Action Foundation's Young Lives provision, Ibrahim found a place where he could make friends, have fun and feel part of a community.

Today, Ibrahim not only takes part in activities, but also supports other young people through our Youth Leadership programme, helping children who are navigating the same challenges he once faced.

A group of our six volunteers joined to support the huge community-led nurdle clean-up effort at North Shields for a day.

In the summer, following an accident in the River Tyne, a billion plastic pellets - known as nurdles - polluted the water and have been washing up on our North East and Yorkshire beaches ever since.

Equipped with dustpans, brushes and kitchen sieves, we swept up, filtered and binned hundreds of pellets, each about the size of a lentil.

This event launched our new volunteering project in partnership with Action Asylum.

Jonathan, local volunteer and asylum seeker, said: "I felt like giving back to the community by volunteering at nurdle cleaning at the Beach, my participation in the effort symbolises me as a Newcastle resident, not necessarily an asylum seeker."

Thank you to our volunteers and everyone in the North East working together to care for this beautiful place we all call home and the marine and bird life it supports. 🧡

Two years ago, Bure arrived in the UK from Nigeria with the promise of stable employment and a brighter future for her family.

As a nursing assistant and mum of five, she was thrilled to secure a role with a care provider. But when her employer's sponsorship licence was revoked, she suddenly found herself unable to work and struggling to support her family.

Through our Language & Learning Service, Bure received employability support, helping her rebuild her confidence, strengthen her CV and secure a new job.

Behind every story like Bure's is a community of supporters helping people find hope when they need it most.

Two years ago, Ashkan* arrived in the UK from Iran with his wife and young son.

Leaving Iran meant leaving behind not only his home, but also the career that shaped so much of his identity as a TV cameraman.

Through our InterAction service, one of our caseworkers connected him to a local photography club and arranged bus travel so he could attend meetings.

We are featured in this The i paper highlighting the challenges faced by the displaced care workers Action Foundation work with.

As our Employability Advisor Lucy explains, as displaced care workers are left searching for new sponsors, "it pushes people into serious financial difficulties and debt... people can't afford their basic needs."

Our Language & Learning service is supporting people through these challenges and helping them find new opportunities through employability advice.

What an amazing day we had at the Great North Run on Sunday! 🏅🏅

We weren’t just dazzled by the sunshine, we were blown away by the incredible support too! ☀️🏃✨

We’re so proud of our incredible team of runners, some with PB half marathon times, and hugely grateful to every single person who sponsored them.

We have one week to furnish and prepare their four-bedroom home and are looking for donations of good-quality household items to help make their new home feel welcoming from day one.

Team Hay & Kilner are taking on the Great North Run!🧡
This Sunday, eight runners from Hay & Kilner will take on the iconic Newcastle to South Shields route, raising vital funds for Action Foundation and our work supporting refugees, asylum seekers and other migrants to build safe, independent lives in the North East.

It has been such an honour to be Hay & Kilner's Charity of the Year 2026. From pub quizzes and volleyball tournaments to backing eight superstar runners this Sunday, their creativity, enthusiasm and support have been incredible throughout.

We're so proud to have them on our team for the world's largest half marathon, right here in the North East. We can't wait to cheer them over the finish line! A huge thank you to everyone at Hay & Kilner for their amazing fundraising efforts.
