🎉 Happy 100th Birthday, Arthur, from SSAFA Tyne and Wear! 🎉
It was a privilege for SSAFA Tyne and Wear to help celebrate the 100th birthday of Second World War veteran Arthur Harkness alongside his family, friends and fellow veterans.
Although Arthur officially turned 100 on 18 July, SSAFA volunteers and members of the Royal British Legion Breakfast Club in Whitley Bay gathered at Rockcliff Rugby Club on 25th July, to mark this remarkable milestone together.
SSAFA Tyne and Wear Chair Chris Tearney was delighted to present Arthur with a special birthday card from the branch on behalf of everyone at SSAFA. In his capacity as Deputy Lieutenant, Chris also presented a congratulatory letter from His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear, Lucy Winskell OBE.
Chris said:
“It is an honour and a privilege to be here today to celebrate Arthur’s birthday with his friends and family, and to share such a significant milestone. Arthur is a modest and reserved gentleman, but he served when his country needed him, and today his community has the opportunity to thank him.”
SSAFA Tyne and Wear would also like to thank the Royal British Legion Whitley Bay Breakfast Club and Rockcliff Rugby Club for bringing everyone together to celebrate Arthur’s incredible life and service.
Happy 100th birthday, Arthur, from everyone at SSAFA! đź’™

🎖️SSAFA Tyne and Wear marks Armed Forces Day at Newcastle Civic Centre

Chris Tearney, Chair of SSAFA Tyne and Wear, attended Newcastle Civic Centre in his role as Deputy Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear to join the Lord Mayor of Newcastle in commemorating Armed Forces Day.

Chris was joined by Armed Forces Champion, Councillor David Downs, as Newcastle City Council paid tribute to veterans, serving personnel, Armed Forces families and cadets for their service, support and dedication.

Armed Forces Day is an important opportunity to recognise the contribution of the whole Armed Forces community — and SSAFA Tyne and Wear is proud to stand alongside them.

Have you ever thought about becoming a volunteer caseworker?

SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, is looking for compassionate people across Tyne and Wear to join our amazing team of volunteer caseworkers.

Every day, members of the Armed Forces community, veterans and their families turn to us during some of the most difficult times in their lives. As a caseworker, you’ll be there to listen, offer practical support and help people access the assistance they need. It can genuinely change lives.

You don’t need to have served in the Armed Forces – just be a good listener, organised, reliable and passionate about helping others. Full training and ongoing support are provided, and you’ll become part of a friendly, welcoming team making a real difference in your local community.

If this sounds like something you’d enjoy, or you know someone who would be perfect for the role, we’d love to hear from you.

🫡Standing Together for Armed Forces Day 🫡

SSAFA's Tyne and Wear Branch Chair, Chris Tearney, was proud to represent the Branch alongside veterans from the Gateshead and Newcastle Branch of the Durham Light Infantry (DLI) Association at Gateshead's Armed Forces Day Flag Raising.
The ceremony was a chance to recognise the dedication, courage and sacrifice of serving personnel, veterans and military families, while bringing the community together in support of those who have served.
It was wonderful to spend time with members of the DLI Association, whose continued commitment to remembering the regiment’s proud history and supporting fellow veterans is inspiring.
A huge thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the event such a meaningful occasion.

It was a pleasure to see so many families enjoying the South Tyneside Armed Forces Families Day as the community came together to celebrate and say thank you to our Armed Forces - an amazing 2000 visitors came to mark the occasion and chat to the SSAFA Tyne and Wear Branch volunteers.

Pictured are Chair of SSAFA Tyne and Wear, Chris Tearney, with the Mayor of South Tyneside, Councillor Stan Wildhirt, the Lord-Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear, Lucy Winskell, Community Engagement Volunteer Freddie Ogudo, Caseworker Dave Hepworth OBE QGM, and the Mayoress of South Tyneside, Dawn Wildhirt.

🥊 ALWAYS PUNCHING ABOVE OUR WEIGHT 🥊

SSAFA Tyne and Wear Branch was delighted to receive a fantastic donation of ÂŁ3,000 following the success of the recent 'Final Bell' Flatsnout boxing event.

The cheque was presented by RAF veteran Paul Fiske of Flatsnout Boxing Club, whose dedication and support have helped raise thousands of pounds of vital funds over the years for serving personnel, veterans and military families in our local community.

The event marked Paul’s final fundraising endeavour with Flatsnout Boxing, making this generous donation particularly special. Through boxing, community spirit and charitable fundraising, Paul has brought people together while making a real difference to others.

In recognition of his outstanding support, representatives from SSAFA were proud to present Paul with a SSAFA shield as a token of our appreciation.

A huge thank you to Paul, Flat Snout Boxing Club and everyone who supported the event. Your generosity will help us continue supporting members of the Armed Forces community when they need us most.

💙 Together, we’re making a difference 💙

A brilliant result for SSAFA Tyne & Wear branch, which benefited from a significant donation thanks to the auction of two highly sought-after Tyne Bridge rivets.

The rivets, salvaged during the landmark restoration of the iconic bridge, were donated by ESH Construction and attracted significant interest at auction, helping to raise valuable funds to support serving personnel, veterans and military families across the region.

Special thanks to Branch Chair Chris Tearney, whose persistence and local connections helped secure the rivets for the branch.

The Tyne Bridge holds a special place in the hearts of people across the North East, and these historic rivets capture that shared sense of identity, resilience and pride perfectly – values that mirror those at the heart of SSAFA.

An outstanding achievement and a brilliant example of community connections being transformed into meaningful support for the Armed Forces family. A big thank you to everyone who helped make it happen.

🎉 A very special 100th birthday celebration in Wallsend! 🎖️

Volunteers from SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, were honoured to visit Ronald at Eastside Gardens Care Home to help celebrate his incredible 100th birthday.

Ronald served with the Royal Artillery during the Second World War, including time in Burma and Normandy. Our Tyne and Wear Branch Chair Chris Tearney presented him with birthday cards from the branch and local supporters, thanking him for his remarkable service to our country

Fellow volunteers Graham Critchlow and Freddie Ogudo spent time chatting with Ronald and sharing a few laughs, while special visitors from 101 Regiment Royal Artillery, the Tyneside Scottish Association and the Deputy Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear, Colonel Varn Jassal TD DL, also joined the celebrations.

Chris Tearney said it was “a great honour and a real pleasure to visit Ronald and thank him for his service as he celebrated such a special milestone.”

Happy 100th birthday, Ronald — and thank you for your service from everyone at SSAFA Tyne and Wear! 💙
