Pretty annoyed as a parent today to be honest.
My 13-year-old son got the Metro from Wallsend to Monument this morning with his bike to go meet friends before heading to Callerton metro station for a bike ride around ponteland . He had a valid Day Saver ticket, was wearing his helmet and was literally just excited for a day out on his bike.
When he got to Monument, he was refused permission to continue his journey because of “incidents with young people on bikes around town.”
I completely understand there’s been issues lately and I fully support action against antisocial behaviour… but not every young person is the same.
James was on his own, polite, respectful and doing absolutely nothing wrong. Instead, he was left upset, stranded in town and needing collected despite paying for his travel.
We’re constantly telling kids to get outdoors, stay active and keep out of trouble… then when they actually do, they get judged anyway.
I’ve contacted Nexus to ask what the actual rules are regarding bikes on the Metro and why a responsible young person was denied travel because of assumptions.
Surely we should be encouraging kids out on their bikes, not making them feel like criminals for it.

I know this is just one incident involving my son, but it’s really frustrated me how quickly all young people seem to be judged because of the actions of a few. There are still plenty of respectful, responsible kids out there who deserve to be treated fairly not automatically viewed as a problem.
