WHO WE ARE
Contact the Elderly is the only national charity solely dedicated to tackling loneliness and social isolation among older people. This page contains information about the North East of England branch, which has groups across the region, including Newcastle, Durham, Middlesbrough and Durham. We're expanding all the time and always looking for new guests and volunteers to enjoy and supp
ort our Sunday afternoon tea parties. See 'Get Involved' below. WHO WE HELP
Contact the Elderly is a national organisation which organises monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups of people aged 75 and over. There are over four million people over 75 in the UK. Over half live alone and one in ten feel that no one even knows they exist. This deep well of loneliness ruins many lives. Contact the Elderly aims to combat this isolation and loneliness by giving older people a regular social activity to look forward to. There are over 500 Contact the Elderly groups scattered across the UK, with almost 6,600 regular volunteers bringing ongoing companionship to over 4,100 lonely, elderly people. HOW WE HELP
On the second Sunday of each month, our guests are picked up by volunteer drivers and taken to an afternoon tea party. The parties are hosted by volunteers, usually in their homes, and our guests spend an afternoon enjoying conversation and companionship over a cup of tea and cake. Over months and years, acquaintances turn into friends and loneliness is replaced by friendship. Our parties bring people of all ages together and give them something to look forward to every month. Do you know an older person who could benefit from our lifeline of friendship? Or could you spare a few hours a month to make a difference in the lives of older people in your community? If so, please contact North East Development Officer, Val Walker, on 0191 242 0186 or email [email protected]
