It's that time of year again when the meadow area of the Green gets its autumn cut. This helps spread flower seeds and gives them a head start in the spring to germinate before the grass grows too long. The mowers are coming in the morning.
There will be three different treatments. Some areas will be left uncut to provide food and shelter for wee beasties and birds. Some areas will be cut very short for developing those for more wildflowers. The rest will be cut a bit longer and, by raking it up and removing it, the soil won't be fertilised which would encourage vigorous plants such as couch grass, thistles and dockens. These thugs will take over if not controlled.
Check the Whatsapp group for raking sessions you may wish to join in the coming week or so, or message us.

Having nearly injured one of the hedgehogs living on Benton Village Green while clearing grass from the orchard it is easy to see why this warning is so needed. So if you are lucky enough to have your own hedgehog visitor please take care.

If you're tidying the garden this week, remember to carefully check for & other before mowing and strimming or tidying wild areas and under hedges - as they're ideal places for a nest!

Volunteers wanted to help plant Hedges for Hope this Tuesday 8.45 - 12.35. Benton Dene School children will be planting small trees provided by the Woodland Trust to form a hedge in the grounds of the school and you are invite to come along and help them for some or all of the morning.
