Welcome to the Alan Shearer Centre page. The site is designed for users of our Centre as an interactive space where you can share information, ask questions, post pictures, provide feedback and keep up with our news. The Alan Shearer Centre comprises two distinct facilities within the same building:
• The Alan Shearer Activity Centre
• The Alan Shearer Short Break Centre

The Centre has

its own dedicated fundraising arm:
• The Alan Shearer Foundation

Launched in May 2012, the funds raised through the Foundation go directly to support these two facilities to provide additional benefits for existing users. The Alan Shearer Activity Centre
The specialist Activity Centre, funded entirely by the Foundation, is completely free of charge to use and is open weekly, Monday to Saturday. It offers access to an array of sensory, fun, and social facilities and activities for disabled people of all ages. We have a hydrotherapy suite, sensory rooms, an interactive sensory cave, a giant ball pool, art and craft rooms and an on-site café. All sensory areas, including the hydrotherapy suite are equipped with tracking hoists for those with mobility difficulties. The Activity Centre also has beautifully landscaped gardens, offering a mix of large lawn areas and quiet woodland walks with wheelchair accessible paths. The Alan Shearer Short Break Centre
The Short Break Centre is a registered facility and provides professional respite breaks for people with complex disabilities and challenging behaviour, including people on the autistic spectrum and with Asperger’s Syndrome. The Centre provides parents and carers with a well-earned rest and peace of mind. The Alan Shearer Centre has full access to the Activity Centre and is the only short break centre in the north east with access to such a wide range of specialist facilities within several acres of grounds. Existing users also benefit from additional free respite breaks, funded by the Foundation. Ring Gareth Bainbridge to arrange a visit or to find out more information about the Alan Shearer Centre. For many young men, spending an evening listening to music, socialising and enjoying a night out with friends is a normal part of life. For Dan, who lives at our Alan Shearer Specialist Residential Home, it is no different.

A keen music fan who loves getting out and about, Dan recently enjoyed a memorable evening at nightclub Digital, accompanied by Residential Care Officer Danny.

The pair headed into the city to attend a country music-themed event, where Dan was able to immerse himself in the atmosphere, enjoy the music and meet new people 🤠

Manager Claire said: "Dan had a brilliant time. The staff couldn't have been more welcoming and he was even invited to join a hen party that was there that night. He was absolutely buzzing when he got back."

At Alan Shearer Specialist Residential Home, support is tailored around each person's individual interests, choices and goals. Whether that's attending football matches, enjoying live music, spending time with friends or trying new experiences, the focus is on helping people live the lives they want to lead.

Happy Hands bring comfort and laughter 😊

It was great to welcome back Zoe from Happy Hands SEND Massage whose specialist SEND massage therapies left two of our Alan Shearer Centre members very content indeed.

Against the calming underwater-themed backdrop of our Immersive Room, Matthew, who lives at our Specialist Residential Home, enjoyed a relaxing massage session accompanied by soothing music. Alongside him, regular member Tristan especially enjoyed the gentle tapping movements designed to mimic raindrops, finding them both relaxing and amusing.

“SEN massage therapy helps with a wide range of disabilities,” said Zoe from Happy Hands. “Helping with mobility often reduces unwanted behaviours but provides so much more.”

A Huge Thank You to British Gas Volunteers 💙

Over the next four weeks, we're delighted to welcome a team of volunteers from British Gas to the Alan Shearer Activity Centre.

The volunteers will be dedicating their time and skills to a range of projects across the site, including planting flowers, improving our gardens, clearing and enhancing our woodland walk, decorating areas of the centre, building new features and helping us create even more welcoming outdoor spaces for everyone who visits.

Their support will make a real difference to our members, families and visitors, helping to keep the centre looking its best and ensuring outdoor areas remain accessible and enjoyable for all.

We're incredibly grateful for their commitment, enthusiasm and willingness to get involved. We look forward to sharing updates and photos of the projects as they progress over the coming weeks.

Thank you, British Gas, for choosing to support the Alan Shearer Activity Centre and the people who use our services. 💙
