Welcome to the Alan Shearer Centre page. The site is designed for users of our Centre as an interactive space where you can share information, ask questions, post pictures, provide feedback and keep up with our news. The Alan Shearer Centre comprises two distinct facilities within the same building:
• The Alan Shearer Activity Centre
• The Alan Shearer Short Break Centre

The Centre has

its own dedicated fundraising arm:
• The Alan Shearer Foundation

Launched in May 2012, the funds raised through the Foundation go directly to support these two facilities to provide additional benefits for existing users. The Alan Shearer Activity Centre
The specialist Activity Centre, funded entirely by the Foundation, is completely free of charge to use and is open weekly, Monday to Saturday. It offers access to an array of sensory, fun, and social facilities and activities for disabled people of all ages. We have a hydrotherapy suite, sensory rooms, an interactive sensory cave, a giant ball pool, art and craft rooms and an on-site café. All sensory areas, including the hydrotherapy suite are equipped with tracking hoists for those with mobility difficulties. The Activity Centre also has beautifully landscaped gardens, offering a mix of large lawn areas and quiet woodland walks with wheelchair accessible paths. The Alan Shearer Short Break Centre
The Short Break Centre is a registered facility and provides professional respite breaks for people with complex disabilities and challenging behaviour, including people on the autistic spectrum and with Asperger’s Syndrome. The Centre provides parents and carers with a well-earned rest and peace of mind. The Alan Shearer Centre has full access to the Activity Centre and is the only short break centre in the north east with access to such a wide range of specialist facilities within several acres of grounds. Existing users also benefit from additional free respite breaks, funded by the Foundation. Ring Gareth Bainbridge to arrange a visit or to find out more information about the Alan Shearer Centre. As we approach the final days of Learning Disability Week, we’d like to share Gail’s story.

With support from her Independent Supported Living team to build her independence, Gail began volunteering at the Alan Shearer Activity Centre, gaining skills, confidence and experience along the way.

When a job opportunity came up at the Centre, she successfully applied and has been a valued part of the team ever since. In a role where she is seen by many, Gail helps to welcome members and visitors with warmth and confidence.

Her journey is a reminder to look beyond the role and see the ambition, determination and potential in every person.

As part of this year’s and its theme ‘Do You See Me?’, we’re sharing stories from across our disability services that celebrate the people we are proud to support.

Dan is a Newcastle United season ticket holder and never misses an opportunity to see his beloved NUFC play at St. James' Park. With the right support from our staff at Alan Shearer Specialist Residential Home, Dan gets to every match and enjoys his favourite kebab on the way home, too.

For Dan, football is a big part of his life. Having the right support in place means he can keep doing something he enjoys and that matters to him.

Next week is and we’ll have lots of stories to share, but we couldn’t wait to show how much Rachel and Dan thoroughly enjoyed the choir at The Glasshouse International Centre for Music last night 💚

This World Environment Day, we’re celebrating the small but meaningful steps being taken across our services to care for the environment and encourage others to join us.

Across St Cuthbert’s Care, our outdoor spaces from small urban gardens to the woodland and grounds at the Alan Shearer Centre offer the people we support places to enjoy, shape and care for nature.

At St Catherine’s nursing home, staff are re-purposing a raised bed into a low-level rockery, helping residents take part in gardening while improving views across the garden, especially for those less able to spend time outdoors.

At our children’s homes, young people are also getting involved, with one young man even building a bird box from scratch to support local wildlife.

We’re also hugely grateful to our gardening volunteers, particularly at the Alan Shearer Centre, whose work helps care for the natural environment and its wild visitors, including foxes and deer.

This work has also supported our nationally recognised environmental accreditation.

Gill Ennis, Director of Compliance, said:

“Achieving independent recognition in the first year of our environmental plan reflects the shared commitment across our services to care for our environment and the spaces we all enjoy.”

World Environment Day reminds us that small, everyday actions can grow into lasting, positive change 🌍
