Bright Northumbria Healthcare Charity We are the official charity of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

Bright Northumbria Healthcare Charity is a registered charity which was formed in 1998. Donations make it possible for us to support a number of projects which can make a huge difference to our patients and staff. We aim to bright a little brightness to the world and improve the patient experience for those accessing Northumbria NHS’ services and well as allowing our staff to provide the very best care.

A healthcare assistant from an Ashington GP practice is preparing to push herself to the limit by taking on a gruelling 100-mile ultramarathon in aid of Bright.

Stef Fitch, who works as a healthcare assistant at NPC Lintonville in Ashington, will take part in the Pilgrims' Ultra 100 Mile challenge.

The Pilgrim’s Ultra is an endurance event that follows the full length of St Oswald's Way through some of Northumberland's most spectacular coastal and countryside scenery.

Stef said: “After completing a 30-mile run and then a 70-mile run, I wanted to challenge myself even further while raising money for a worthy cause. Bright does incredible work across Northumbria Healthcare and makes a real difference to patients and staff.”

Supporters like Henry have the power to brighten the day for our staff, patients and volunteers 💛

16 years ago, Henry's late wife, Julie, received care from the palliative care unit at Wansbeck Hospital. Today, on what would have been Julie's birthday, Henry visited the unit and made an incredibly generous donation of £600.

Over the years, Henry has taken on many fundraising challenges, including a trek to Everest Base Camp around 12 years ago, raising approximately £2,500 for the unit.

Meeting supporters like Henry truly makes our day. His kindness and continued support mean so much to our hardworking teams and help us make a difference for patients and their families.

Henry, it's our turn to say thank you.

Throughout May and June, Bright Charity funded four weekly sessions on our elderly care ward, led by dance and creative health practitioner Susie Tate and musician Simon Wood.

Through gentle movement and live music, patients were supported with rehabilitation, confidence, wellbeing and social connection during their hospital stay.

This is just one example of how donations help us go beyond clinical care, funding projects that enhance patient experience and support wellbeing across our hospitals.

Join Bright Charity in this year’s Dragon Boat Race ⛵

Take part in this year’s NE1 Dragon Boat Race on Saturday 26 September in support of Bright!

For the first time ever, we will be taking to the Tyne to battle it out for the trophy against other NHS Trusts and businesses – with four boats painting the Tyne yellow!

Boats can take up to 17 people, if you would like to take part as an individual or smaller group we can match you up. This is open to everyone, so if you have friends and family who want to get involved, please share!

No training needed, you will receive a safety briefing and all equipment on the day.

Leaving a gift in your will can enhance care for our patients now and for future generations.

Your generosity can provide vital equipment, enhance patient care, and help us look after our Northumbria Healthcare staff who make a difference to patients every day – helping us to brighten people’s lives when they need it most.

Gifts in wills have helped us to:
• Provide specialist wigs and support for cancer patients experiencing hair loss.
• Refurbish the waiting areas in our oncology department to create a calming, supportive and patient-centred space for patients and their families.
• Purchased pocket-sized ultrasound systems for various clinical needs; cardiac, vascular and general assessments – making care more flexible.

Dave and John raised more than £3,500 for North Tyneside's Oncology Day Unit this June after seeing first-hand the impact of the care their family members received there.

The funds will help to enhance the patient experience, whether that's through specialist equipment, room refurbishments, or initiatives that brighten patients' days.

We were delighted to welcome Dave and John back to the unit for the first time in over a year and show them the improvements made by our environment team to patient areas.

Lead cancer nurse Amanda Walsh also spoke about the positive impact that a welcoming environment can have on patients throughout their treatment journey.

Hundreds of children across North Tyneside and Northumberland have benefited from this year’s Hoops 4 Health programme, thanks to the continued partnership between Bright Charity and Newcastle Eagles Community Foundation.

Now in its 13th year, the programme combines basketball coaching with fun health and wellbeing education, helping young people build confidence, stay active and develop healthy habits for life.

This year, Hoops 4 Health:
✅ Reached 1,258 pupils through educational roadshows
✅ Delivered basketball coaching to 539 students
✅ Supported 224 young people to take part in tournaments
✅ Enabled 32 students to compete in the tournament finals

For the first time, the programme also included dental health education, with support from Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, helping children and families learn more about looking after their oral health.

The programme culminated in exciting tournament finals at the Vertu Motors Arena, where pupils had the chance to play under professional lights and in front of thousands of spectators.

A huge congratulations to all the schools, pupils, coaches and partners involved in another successful year of inspiring healthier, happier futures through sport 💙
