At North East Sight Matters, our qualified and experienced team understands the practical and emotional impact of living with a sight impairment.

We create opportunities for children and young people with visual impairments to build confidence, gain independence, make friends and enjoy new experiences in a supportive, inclusive environment.

Through family activities, outdoor adventures, social events and peer support, we help children explore the world, try new things and simply be children. We also bring families together, connecting parents and carers with others who understand their journey.

If you have a child or young person with a sight impairment and would like to learn more, we’d love to hear from you.

Together, we’re building a community where children with a sight impairment can thrive. πŸ’™

There has been a lot of discussion recently following government announcements about restricting access to some social media platforms for under-16s. Whatever your views on the proposals, it has certainly reignited an important conversation about the amount of time our children spend on screens.

At North East Sight Matters, we witness the benefits every day of encouraging children and young people to put devices down and reconnect with the world around them.

Exploring nature, playing outdoors, noticing the changing seasons, listening to birdsong, climbing, creating, and simply being present in their surroundings all help to build confidence, independence, resilience and social skills. For children with sight impairments these experiences can be even more valuable, supporting mobility, sensory development and an understanding of the environment that no screen can replicate.

Technology has an important place in our lives, but so do muddy boots, fresh air, laughter with friends and the excitement of discovering something new.

Perhaps this latest debate is a reminder that childhood should be about balance. The greatest adventures are often waiting just around the corner.

This was from the Open Farm Sunday event held at Blagdon Farm.
