🍏It’s Great Big Green Week - the theme this year, Together for Good, reflects a simple truth: when people come together in their communities, they create real, practical benefits - for local places, for nature, for climate and for our shared future.

🌼The Friends of Leazes Park do this all year round by providing a Friends Garden for people and pollinators to enjoy, planting a community orchard, regular litter picking, guided walks in the park, a Fairtrade organisation, work with students, volunteers and NUFC, members of the Newcastle Parks Forum and the National Federation of Parks and Green Spaces.

💚You are welcome to join us, chat with us when you see us working in the park and follow us on fb

What if insects in our city weren’t background life, but essential workers shaping how the city functions?

The ones we overlook. The ones we avoid. The ones quietly holding ecosystems together. Not incidental, just unseen. Pollinating plants. Breaking down waste. Sustaining soil and growth in ways we rarely acknowledge.

Insects as workers & citizens

Teenage Shelters in Parks.
Teenagers need somewhere to go. Not just something to do.

When we speak to teenage girls about parks, one of the things that comes upall the time is somewhere to sit, talk and spend time together. Somewhere that feels comfortable, social and theirs.

And in the UK, that also means somewhere with cover. Because if we’re honest, the weather shapes how spaces are used. If there’s nowhere to shelter, then hanging out outdoors just isn’t an option for much of the year. In other countries, it may be the shade that is needed.

Too often, “teen shelters” are treated as an afterthought. A metal structure placed at the edge or in the middle of a field- exposed, isolated, uninviting and highly visible in a way that can feel uncomfortable rather than safe. But it doesn’t have to be like that.

When shelters are designed well, using warmer materials, thoughtful positioning and a bit of care, they can become spaces that girls actually want to use. Places to gather, chat, laugh and just be, whatever the weather.

What kind of teenage shelters would work? We'd love to see and hear about any examples you've come across.
