Exactly one year on from the Supreme Court ruling, what is Keir Starmer’s legacy?

A trans+ toilet ban. Confusion. Fear. Chaos.

Starmer said trans women are not women. He said the ruling brought clarity. He lied.

We have endless litigation, organisations guessing, and people’s lives reduced to legal uncertainty. No guidance. No leadership. Just a vacuum filled by the courts and the Equality and Human Rights Commission.

The impact is real.

Lives lost - people have died. Jobs lost. Friendships broken. Children self-harming. Women’s groups disbanded.

Let’s be clear.

There is no evidence trans women are a threat to cis women. None. FOI requests show no complaints in toilets. None in hospital wards.

No evidence of harm. Let that sink in.

But now harm is happening.

Cis women challenged and thrown out of bathrooms for not looking “feminine enough”.

Trans men have been erased from the debate.

No trans voices heard in the supreme court case, not one. They where deliberately excluded.. thats political, not justice. A year later, still no workable answers. Just an appalling bureaucratic mess.

And it puts the UK at odds with its own commitments.

The European Court of Human Rights has long upheld dignity, privacy and protection from discrimination.
The United Nations has been clear that trans people must be protected from exclusion and harm.

This approach risks breaching those principles.

This is a complete failure of government.

Starmer looks spineless, following the same culture war playbook as Donald Trump.

Women are speaking out.

Not in Our Name: Women in support of the trans+ community

“As women we reject the narrative that trans+ people are a threat.”

100,000+ have signed.

We deserve clarity.
We deserve dignity.
We deserve better.

A ruling that was supposed to provide legal clarity has left service providers more confused than ever, and Trans+ people vulnerable. What now?

Stonewall is delighted to announce that Kezia Dugdale will be its new Chair, taking up the position in September.

"I'm thrilled and honoured to be joining Stonewall at such a critical turning point in its story," she says. "There are too many stories both here and across the globe of rights being rolled back and progress reversed for us to rest easy. That's why I'm choosing to volunteer my time as Chair, to support the brilliant and inspiring leadership of Simon Blake and his wider team."

Having served as an MSP, Leader of Scottish Labour, as Director of the John Smith Centre and now as Associate Director of the UofG Centre for Public Policy, Kezia brings with her a wealth of experience in law-making and public policy.

"I am excited about the opportunity to work with Kezia," says our CEO Simon Blake. "She has a deep commitment to public service and a long history of advocating for LGBTQ+ equality. Her skills and experience across academia, politics and welfare will be an asset to Stonewall as we deliver on our purpose to create a safe and equal world for LGBTQ+ people to live, work and thrive."

The LGBTQ+ community is raising its voice and demanding urgent action following a troubling rise in violence against transgender individuals. Advocates, activists, and human rights organizations are calling for stronger legal protections, policy reform, and immediate enforcement of anti-discrimination laws to ensure safety and justice for all.

This growing concern has intensified discussions around public safety strategies, civil rights law, and legal advocacy services, with experts emphasizing the need for comprehensive solutions. From legal consultation and human rights defense to community protection programs and awareness campaigns, there is an increasing demand for professional services that address both prevention and accountability. Governments and institutions are also being urged to invest in diversity training programs, law enforcement reform, and victim support services.

The movement highlights the importance of education, social responsibility, and inclusive policymaking in combating hate and discrimination. By amplifying voices and pushing for systemic change, communities are working together to create safer environments and protect vulnerable individuals.

This call to action is not just about response—it’s about prevention, justice, and building a future where everyone can live freely without fear.
