It's International Sloth Day, and sloths are a lesson in living together ๐Ÿฆฅ๐ŸŒ

โ€˜Symbioticโ€™ comes from the Greek for living together. Sloth fur has evolved to hold moisture, so it becomes a home for algae, fungi, moths and beetles. The algae gets somewhere to grow, and the sloth gets green camouflage. It's a tiny ecosystem moving slowly through the canopy.

Rafe from The Living Rainforest, which the Trust runs, explains how, with help from Cinnamon the sloth.

At the Trust for Sustainable Living, this is the thinking we want to grow in young people: nothing in nature thrives alone. Every living thing is part of a bigger system.

๐Ÿ‘€ See it for yourself: visit Cinnamon, our free-roaming sloth, at The Living Rainforest in Berkshire. She lives in the canopy alongside hundreds of other rainforest species.

Caring for our planet and caring for ourselves go hand in hand ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ’š

This , weโ€™re proud to share a recent visit to The Living Rainforest, which the Trust runs, by residents and staff from Response, a charity that supports people with mental health needs and helps them find a safe place to call home.

There was laughter at the Vietnamese giant stick insects (spot them, if you can!), gasps at the snakes, and lots of chat about garden birds, sparked by the tropical bird calls overhead. Our Stanhopea intermedia orchid is in flower right now, and its golden blooms add a beautiful fragrance to the glasshouse ๐ŸŒผ Everyone had time to slow down, rest on the benches among the plants, and finish with cake and iced lattes in the cafรฉ. Moments like these remind us why protecting the natural world matters, for the planet and for our wellbeing.

Our Sustainability Away Days combine team time, strategic thinking and a guided rainforest tour, and every booking supports our education work. Find out more: livingrainforest.org/sustainabilitydays

๐ŸŒ Happy World Teachers' Day!

Thank you to every teacher helping young people understand our planet and how to protect it.

Each year, around 25,000 pupils explore The Living Rainforest with our award-winning guides, discovering how rainforest plants and animals are connected to everyday life, and why sustainability matters. Rafe's videos keep that learning going on The Living Rainforest social media pages long after the school trip, bringing the rainforest straight into the home and classroom.

Teachers, you inspire the next generation of planet protectors. Thank you! ๐ŸŒฑ

๐Ÿ’š Thank you to the Renaissance Foundation for spending the day with us recently.

The visit included a guided rainforest tour, lunch and a walk through our local woodland, giving the group the opportunity to compare two very different habitats and explore the importance of biodiversity.

We had some fantastic conversations about nature, wellbeing and conservation. By the end of the day, we all agreed that spending time in nature helps us recharge and feel more connected, while reminding us why protecting the environment matters.
The young people impressed us with their knowledge, curiosity and thoughtful questions, keeping our experts happily challenged throughout the day.

There was also a very special appearance from Cinnamon the sloth, who came out to say hello! ๐Ÿฆฅ

Thank you to everyone who joined us!

Experiences like this form part of our wider sustainability education work. Through our Sustainability Away Days, we welcome corporate teams, universities, business schools, schools, teachers and youth groups to explore sustainability, biodiversity and nature-based learning in a unique rainforest setting.

๐Ÿ’š Thank you, Pierre Fabre Group, for choosing to spend your Family Away Day with us this week.

It was fantastic to see staff and their families exploring the rainforest together, learning about biodiversity and enjoying close encounters with some of our rainforest residents.

Spotting a remarkable plant with significant contributions to healthcare research was a particular favourite for the Pierre Fabre team, while younger visitors enjoyed spotting monkeys, meeting reptiles and watching Edwin the toucan demonstrate his impressive blueberry-catching skills! ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿฆœ๐Ÿ

Through experiences like these, we're able to inspire greater understanding of sustainability, conservation and the importance of protecting our natural world.
Would your organisation like to combine team building, family engagement and sustainability learning?

Happy Earth Day ๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿ’š

This yearโ€™s theme for our International Student Competition was Sustainability Culture, which connects perfectly with the 2026 Earth Day theme: โ€œOur Power, Our Planet.โ€ Both themes remind us that real change starts with people, communities, and the choices we make every day to protect the world around us.

We have been inspired by the creativity, passion, and thoughtful ideas shared in this yearโ€™s competition entries. From renewable energy and reducing waste to protecting biodiversity and creating greener communities, students from around the world have shown that the next generation is ready to lead the way.

Our judges are currently reviewing all of your wonderful submissions, and we have to sayโ€”itโ€™s becoming incredibly difficult to choose a winner!

Thank you to everyone who took part and used your voice to champion a more sustainable future. ๐ŸŒฑโœจ
