In 2024/25, one in eight UK armed forces personnel accessed military healthcare for mental health-related reasons, a powerful reminder that mental health challenges within the armed forces community are widespread and deserve proper attention and support.

For veterans in the justice system, access to appropriate mental health support can be even harder to come by. Their needs are often unrecognised, and the specialist support that could make a difference is not always available when it's needed most.

At Care after Combat, we work alongside veterans in the justice system to ensure they receive consistent, informed support, because no veteran should face their challenges alone.

Something significant is launching today. ☀️

SUNRAY TWOSIX is a veteran-led wellbeing journey travelling from Loch Lomond through the Outer Hebrides to Edinburgh, meeting veterans where they are in some of Scotland's most remote communities.

It's about more than the miles. It's about raising awareness of veteran wellbeing and making sure no veteran feels forgotten.

There is something uniquely powerful about being supported by someone who understands where you have come from.

For veterans in the justice system, that shared understanding makes an enormous difference. When a mentor knows the culture and the challenges of military life from the inside, the support they offer carries a weight that is hard to replicate any other way.

That shared experience is at the heart of how Care after Combat works. Our mentors truly understand, and that makes a difference.

If you are a veteran who needs someone to talk to, our 24/7 helpline is available.

What does stress look like for you?

Stress shows up differently for everyone, and for veterans, it can come from multiple directions at once: transition, relationships, finances, and more.

We've just published a practical guide exploring how stress affects veteran mental health and what can genuinely help.

For those who may be new to who we are and what we do: Care after Combat is a UK charity dedicated to supporting veterans in the justice system, one of the most overlooked groups within our armed forces community.

Through one-to-one mentorship and consistent, personalised support, we work alongside veterans during custody and after release, helping them to rebuild their lives and reintegrate successfully into their communities.

If you'd like to support our work, there are several ways to get involved, from fundraising and volunteering to leaving a gift in your will.

Every contribution, no matter how small, makes a difference to the veterans who need us most.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for our Thrive Together Training session on the 12th of May!

We're happy to share that there's another session coming up, and we'd love for you to be part of it.

This training is designed for professionals across all services who work with UK military veterans. You'll explore the challenges veterans face when transitioning to civilian life and how those challenges can contribute to vulnerability in the justice system.

You'll also have the chance to examine common myths that can affect sentencing outcomes, and gain practical, experience-led guidance on how best to support veterans in and after the justice system.

Thrive Together Training returns on 12 June 2026, with two sessions available, morning and afternoon, so you can choose the time that works best for you.
