☀️🌿 Enjoying our sites this summer? Please take extra care.

With hot, dry conditions, even the smallest source of ignition, such as ci******es, BBQs or discarded glass bottles, can quickly spark a fire with serious consequences for wildlife and habitats.

🔥 Please help us protect these special places by staying fire aware and taking your litter home.

An extreme heat warning has been issued by the Met Office, with severe wildfire conditions forecast across parts of Kent. These conditions mean that if a fire starts, it can spread rapidly, putting people, homes, wildlife and the environment at risk.

You can help reduce the risk by:
✅ Disposing of ci******es safely and never dropping them on the ground.
✅ Taking litter home with you, as glass and metal can reflect sunlight and increase the risk of fire.
✅ Avoid having barbecues and lighting bonfires. But if you do, make sure you follow all safety precautions and keep them well clear of greenery and property.

A small action can have serious consequences in these conditions. Please take extra care and help protect our communities and countryside. If you do see a fire, move to a place of safety, ring 999 and ask for the fire service, providing as much information as possible.

This week is National . So much of what we do is made possible by people giving their time to support nature.

Across our sites, volunteers play a key role in caring for Kent’s natural spaces. They help manage chalk grasslands, monitor rivers, check livestock, assist with admin, support events and school visits, and bring their time and energy as part of corporate days. Young volunteers build skills and confidence as they explore opportunities in the environmental sector. Every contribution helps protect and improve the landscapes we look after.

Volunteer commitment makes a genuine, lasting difference - thank you to everyone who has given their time to support us, past and present.

You can read more about the impact of volunteering in our latest blog, written by one of our volunteers:

Who remembers the nest boxes that our volunteers constructed last summer? 🔨
They were installed last winter in the Long Pits area of the Dungeness Estate to replace some old ones.

We were lucky enough to join a survey of the nest boxes recently, and as you can see, the new home in the photo has proved to be very productive for a family of Great T**s. Believe it or not, there are eleven chicks in this box, all healthy and now with a lightweight ring around their leg so that they can be monitored in the future. Other boxes revealed similar sized broods of both Great Tit and Blue Tit.

Bird box checking and ringing can only be done by a licensed surveyor and is used to monitor bird populations. Information can be gained on how long they live, how they move and where they migrate to.
Thanks to Jacob and the team at the Dungeness Bird Observatory for inviting us along. It was rewarding to see all the hard work that our volunteers put in had paid off, and great to see so many Great Tit chicks looking comfy in their new home!

Want to get involved? We have an extensive volunteer programme across all of our sites, and you can pick and choose which tasks you wish to attend.
We'll have another bird box building session happening soon! Want to find out more? Head over to our website 👉 https://www.whitecliffscountryside.org.uk/support-us/volunteer

📍 Romney Warren Local Nature Reserve
📆 Thursday 28 May, 10 am - 12 pm
👉 FREE drop in event, turn up anytime between 10 am and 12 pm.

Our much‑loved bug hotel needs a little TLC to make sure it’s ready to house thousands of fascinating insects. With your help, we’ll create cosy hideaways that provide a safe refuge through the colder months and the perfect place for bugs to raise their families.

After building, grab your explorer tools and set off to search the reserve for bugs of all shapes and sizes. Get up close, discover who lives where, and find out why these tiny creatures are so important. Rangers Jasmine and James will be on hand to help identify your finds and share lots of fun facts along the way.

We’ll provide all the materials and guidance on how to create the bug hotel, but if you wish to bring along your own materials to contribute, we welcome that! We would be looking for:

Bricks with holes
Old bits of untreated wood
Plant pots (no plastic, please!)
Bamboo canes
Sticks
Pine cones

Make sure to cast your vote on the day on what the newly revamped bug hotel should be named!

The cows are back, and 10 of them have been busy grazing on Romney Warren recently!
These conservation champions have been hard at work managing the grassland, tearing the grass with their tongues. We think they look pretty happy about their progress so far!

If you see them on your travels, be sure to give them a wave! Please also remember to keep your dogs on a lead to keep everyone safe and happy!
