Meet the team: Steph

➡️ How and when did you get involved in NRAD?

I went along to a rehearsal a few weeks after the first meeting to see what it was all about and maybe do some dancing. As a shy person I didn't think I would ever perform on stage, but I was given a speaking villager part and then a sandstorm (type of witch) which was such fun. I enjoyed it so much and have been given so much encouragement and confidence by the NRAD family that I've stayed.

➡️ What has been your favourite show?

I think my favourite show was either the first one - Jack Frost - probably because I didn't know what I'd let myself in for or Sleeping Beauty, my first principal part.

➡️ What is your favourite part of rehearsals?

Rehearsals are so much fun and although we work hard we laugh a lot too.

➡️ What is your favourite ensemble moment?

My favourite ensemble moment was when I had to do my 'flashing act'! I was wearing a trenchcoat and had to whip it open to reveal lots of clocks and watches (and luckily my village's costume!). This drew quite a laugh from the audience.

✨ Throwback Thursday to NRAD’s offering at last year’s New Romney Country Fayre!

Who remembers our Aladdin-themed character hunt? 🕵️

Visitors had to track down characters all around the fayre site, collecting stamps along the way to exchange for a prize (and before anyone asks… forehead stamps were not a standard part of the game! 😂)

Alongside the character hunt, our team brought games, prizes, face painting, and a dedicated box office for visitors to purchase tickets to upcoming shows. 🎟️

We’re back at the New Romney Country Fayre on Saturday 25th July, and our amazing team already has more games, activities and prizes lined up!

Meet the team: Kat! 🎭

➡️ How and when did you get involved in NRAD?

My mum, Sue, is one of the founding members of NRAD, and after seeing their first few shows, I was really keen to join. I joined in 2019 and performed in my first show with NRAD - Godspell - which was bonkers but so much fun!! Since then I’ve enjoyed being part of a number of productions and am looking forward to the next one!

➡️ Your favourite role?

My favourite role was playing Maleficent in Sleeping Beauty! Being evil was so much fun and I still sometimes wish I could really turn people in to toads. muahahaha!

➡️ What is your favourite part of NRAD?

My favourite part of NRAD is that it really is like having a big extended family. Whether I’ve had a good or bad week, I can just go along and be my weird self, have lots of laughs, and do lots of singing and dancing! I’ve met some really wonderful people and have so many great memories.

✨ We’re changing up our TBT this week and looking back at one of our favourite community events… Light Up New Romney!

In December, we swapped stage lights for fairy lights and joined hundreds of local people to help brighten the streets of New Romney. 🌟

As a community theatre group, we love getting involved in events beyond our productions, and the Light Up Parade is always a highlight of the calendar.

Meet the team – Lyra 🎭

➡️ Which has been your favourite show so far?

My favourite show was Cinderella because of its strong staging, enthusiastic audience, and challenging, high-energy choreography.

➡️ What is your dream role?

My dream role is Snow White. Seeing her pantomime performance is what first inspired me to start acting, and it’s a role I’ve always hoped to play.

➡️ Your favourite moment?

My favourite moment was during Aladdin when Derek was reminding us to remember our lines and improvise if needed, only to immediately forget his own line and ask, “It’s me? It’s my line, isn’t it?” The audience thought it was part of the joke and laughed for ages, making the scene even funnier. It was a great reminder of how comfortable and supportive our group is, even in vulnerable moments. Afterwards, Derek used it as a lesson: what feels like a mistake to us often goes unnoticed by the audience… as long as you stay confident

➡️ What is the best part of rehearsals?

The best thing about rehearsals is watching everyone grow in confidence and develop their characters, seeing how much they learn and evolve as performers. I also love hearing about their ambitions and what they want to do next. We’re all here for the same reason: a shared passion for the arts and a love of performing.

🎭 Meet the Team: Janet

Once again, we’re meeting another one of our long term members, who has been here since the very beginning. ♥️

➡️ How and when did you get involved in NRAD?

I became involved with NRAD when I moved from London to Littlestone in 2018. I was asked if I would like to do Box Office and Front of House by Derek, who I have known for a very long time. My reply was Yes straight away and 8 years later I’m still enjoying and loving it.

➡️ What is your favourite thing about NRAD?

My favourite thing about NRAD is the friendliness of everyone, and the way that we are always there for each other.

➡️ What would you say to someone looking to join?

Come along we don’t bite. Join in the fun and sometimes the sheer madness and make new friends and memories.

🎭 MEET THE TEAM: Elizabeth

Elizabeth is another one of our members who has been involved since the very beginning. ✨

➡️ How and when did you get involved in NRAD?

I joined NRAD right from the very first meeting back in November 2017 after seeing a post on Facebook. The reason I decided to give it a go was because I wanted to do something for me, that got me out the house and gave me a chance to meet like minded people whilst doing something I used to enjoy back when I was at school.

➡️ What is your favourite part of NRAD?

I have two favourite parts. The first is having an opportunity to perform on stage in front of our amazing audiences. The second is the fact that I have made so many friendships over the last eight years. Two of which have become so very special to me.

➡️ What has been your favourite show?

It would either be Dick Whittington, as that was my first ever principal role and I loved being given that opportunity, or ‘A Century of Muscals’ as I wrote and directed it myself and had so much fun doing it.

🎭 MEET THE TEAM: Cameron

Cam is one of NRAD’s OGs and has been part of the company since day one.

➡️ How and when did you get involved in NRAD?

I’ve been involved with the company since the very beginning, as my father was the one who founded it.

➡️ What is your favourite part of NRAD?

My favourite part of NRAD is all the parties we have together. Those moments always bring everyone closer and make NRAD feel like more than just a team - it feels like a family.

➡️ Your favourite role?

My favourite role was Buttons, the silly billy character in Cinderella, because this is the role I always wanted to play. I loved bringing the character to life, making people laugh, and adding elements of my own personality to truly make it my own.

➡️ Favourite part of rehearsal?

10pm when we go home.

➡️ What has been your favourite show so far?

My favourite show so far has to be Godspell, as I have seen members of my family perform in this show and win awards with it.
