Today, the lifeboat station flag has been lowered to half mast to honour the memory of two men who lost their lives in the pursuit of their efforts to save lives at sea.

Bill Ewen and Frank Petsch of Marine Rescue NSW, Australia, tragically lost their lives in Ballina last month.

Our thoughts are with their families and loved ones.

We invite maritime SAR organisations around the world to honour the memory of Bill Ewen and Frank Petsch of Marine Rescue NSW, Australia, who tragically lost their lives in Ballina last month, by lowering flags to half-mast on Monday 15 June, the day of Bill’s funeral.

Their passing is a solemn reminder of the courage, dedication and sacrifice of those who put themselves at risk to save lives at sea. By joining us in this tribute, we acknowledge not only Bill and Frank’s service, but the commitment of all maritime SAR personnel who answer the call to help others in times of need.

If you are marking this tribute, please share photos with us at [email protected] so we can share them with the wider community.

Yesterday morning, we took part in a multi‑agency missing persons exercise in the Llangrannog area.

The exercise involved Gwylwyr Y Glannau Cei Newydd / HM Coastguard - New Quay Wales, HM Coastguard - Teifi, Area 13 Coastguard Drone Team and Dyfed-Powys Police, as well as both our inshore and all‑weather lifeboats.

Thank you to Gwersyll yr Urdd Llangrannog for hosting and to New Quay CRT for organising the exercise. Training exercises such as this provide an ideal opportunity to practise and improve team working and communication between the various agencies involved in a missing persons scenario.

On the way back from Llangrannog, we used the time to practise a number of drills, such as towing, slow speed transfers, mechanical failure and emergency procedures.

Diolch yn fawr i Wersyll yr Urdd Llangrannog am gynnal yr ymarfer ac i Wylwyr y Glannau Cei Newydd am drefnu. Mae ymarferion fel hyn yn hollbwysig ar gyfer gwella sgiliau ac i ymarfer a gwella cydweithio a chyfathrebu rhwng y gwahanol asiantaethau.

On Wednesday night, our all-weather lifeboat took part in a multi-vessel search and rescue exercise, together with colleagues from RNLI Fishguard Lifeboat and RNLI Cardigan Lifeboat.

The exercise was coordinated by HM Coastguard, with members of all three crews invited to attend the Coastguard’s Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) at Milford Haven to observe how major search operations are planned and coordinated.

Exercises like this are an ideal opportunity to practise for major search operations, and strengthen communication and teamwork with our colleagues from flank stations. Thank you to Milford Haven Coastguard and to all three crews for making the exercise a such valuable learning experience.

Meanwhile, our inshore lifeboat was on exercise in New Quay bay, putting some of our newer crew through their paces.

Thank you to Fishguard RNLI crew member Ian Davies for photo 3 and to Cardigan RNLI for photo 6.

📟📟 At 19:11 yesterday evening, New Quay’s all-weather lifeboat was tasked to assist a yachtsman in difficulty in the Aberystwyth area, together with our colleagues from Aberystwyth RNLI.

The 29ft yacht had experienced mechanical problems and the one person on board was suffering from fatigue and illness. The yachtsman was safely evacuated to shore by Aberystwyth lifeboat, where further care was provided, and two of New Quay’s crew were transferred to the yacht.

Attempts to restart the engine failed and, with the anchor dragging, it was decided that a tow would be the safest option in order to prevent the yacht becoming a navigational hazard in the approaches to Aberystwyth harbour. Due to weather conditions on scene, it was decided that the all-weather lifeboat would tow the yacht to the nearest safe haven of New Quay.

With the yacht secured to a mooring in New Quay harbour, the lifeboat was recovered and the crew were stood down at 01:30.

📟📟 This afternoon at 17:40, New Quay's inshore lifeboat was tasked to assist two persons cut off by the tide between New Quay harbour beach and Traethgwyn.

The two persons were quickly located by the crew and were then taken aboard the ILB and transported back to New Quay harbour.

If you're walking on the coast, remember to check tide times before you set off and, if you do get into difficulty, call 999 and ask for Coastguard.

📟📟 Two shouts in two days for New Quay ILB.

Yesterday at 19:11, our inshore lifeboat was tasked to assist a swimmer in difficulty in New Quay Bay, following a 999 call from a concerned relative. Shortly after the ILB arrived on scene, the first informant confirmed that the person had made it to shore and did not require any medical attention.

This afternoon, station personnel provided casualty care to a person who had fallen and sustained serious injuries on New Quay beach. Our colleagues at Gwylwyr Y Glannau Cei Newydd / HM Coastguard - New Quay Wales were then tasked and evacuated the casualty to the lifeboat station, where casualty care was provided for an extended period. The ILB was launched at 19:00 to transfer the casualty to the main harbour slipway and into the care of the Welsh Ambulance service.

Thank you to the doctors and members of the public who assisted. We wish the casualty a full and speedy recovery.

If you see anyone in difficulty at sea or on the coast, call 999 and ask for Coastguard.
