It’s Ash Wednesday, so we’re thinking about ash 🤔💭— but not just the kind that marks a season. The ocean has its own ashy places too. 🌊🖤✨

Far below the surface 🌊, near undersea volcanoes 🌋 and hydrothermal vents ♨️, the seafloor is built from cooled lava ☄️and drifting volcanic ash 🌫️. It looks harsh, dark, and lifeless… but it isn’t. 🌌🐚

Giant tube worms 🪱, deep-sea crabs 🦀, and pale shrimp 🦐 thrive in these extreme environments. No sunlight 🌒, crushing pressure ⚡, water rich with minerals 💧 from deep within the Earth 🌍 . And still, entire ecosystems 🌱🐠 grow in places shaped by ash and fire🔥.

If you’re observing Lent ✝️ and giving something up for the next 40 days 🗓️, take a little inspiration from these deep-sea survivors💪🏻. Even in the toughest environments 💀🌊, life finds a way to adapt 🔄 and keep going 💪💫.

Today feels like a good day to appreciate that kind of resilience. 🖤🔥🌊💙

Happy Pancake Day! 🥞✨🎉

As it’s Pancake Day, it’s only right we make today’s post about the ocean’s own “pancake” 🥞🐟 - the Pancake Batfish!🥞🦇

This tiny, flat fish doesn’t swim much. Instead, it “walks” along the seafloor using its fins like little legs 👣🐠🌊. It spends its time hunting small invertebrates 🦐🪱 and blending in with sandy bottoms 🏖️🐚.

What’s your favourite pancake topping: lemon and sugar 🍋 ✨chocolate 🍫and berries🍓🫐, or something a little more… ocean-inspired? 🦀🐙🌊

Each year, they reunite with their chosen mate, braving icy Antarctic winds 💨together and taking turns caring for their precious egg. Talk about relationship goals! ❄️🥚

Happy International Day of Women and Girls in Science! 🔬💙🌍✨

I’ve wanted to be a marine biologist 🦈since I was 4 years old 🌊🐠🐚, and I’m so grateful that I’ve been able to follow that dream 💫🎓. The opportunities 🐬I’ve had so far have shaped who I am, and I’m thankful for every mentor, friend, and inspiring woman who helped me along the way 🤍👩‍🔬🌟.

There’s still so much more to come, and I’m excited for everything the future holds 🚀🌍💙. Here’s to following our dreams, supporting each other, and inspiring the next generation of women and girls in science 💫🔬🌊👭✨

Anyone who knows me… knows I’m a massive bird nerd 🤓🦜… However, I bet you didn’t know “Seagulls,” also known as Herring Gulls 🐦🌊, are a highly intelligent species 🧠✨🤯.

This is because Gulls absolutely observe people before stealing food 👀🍴🥪, and this behavior is a sign of high intelligence 💡🧩.

Research 📖🧐 shows that Herring Gulls watch humans to learn what food is available, safe, and desirable 🥨🍕🍟, often using “stimulus enhancement” 🔍 to pick out specific items—like a particular color of crisp packet 🟡🔵—that they have seen a person eating 🍴.

So next time a seagull eyes 👀 your chips… remember, it’s not just stealing… it’s strategy 🎯🍟

That’s a navigation buoy ⚓🟡—basically a road sign for boats 🚤🌊 telling them where it’s safe to travel or where hazards might be ⚠️.

📸 This is a photo I took while I was out on a research trip in Cardigan Bay - Wales🔬🌊

From the features in the photo 📸:
- The yellow color usually means it’s a special mark 🟡✨

These can indicate things like:
- Anchorage areas ⚓🛟
- Traffic separation zones 🚢↔️🚢
- Underwater cables or pipelines 🔌🌊
- Scientific or military areas 🔬🪖
- Other special-purpose zones 📍🗺️

The black double-cone shape on top 🔺🔻 (called a topmark) helps boaters identify it during the day ☀️👀.

What it marks exactly depends on the local charts 🗺️📍, but its main job is simple—give navigational info ℹ️ and keep vessels in safe water🛟

Jellyfish 🪼 or plastic bag? 🛍️

To us, one is life🪼 and one is trash🗑️
🐢To a turtle, they look the same 👀…A floating plastic bag can look exactly like a jellyfish — and one wrong bite can be fatal🫩🪦💀 When we throw litter🥫on the floor it doesn’t disappear… It ends up in the ocean🐢🌊

♻️🌍Reduce. Reuse. Refuse single-use plastic ♻️🌍

FUN FACT: 🌊🤓: Male seahorses get pregnant and give birth…weird right? 😵‍💫

Nature really said: men, your turn. 😌✨

The female transfers her eggs 🥚 into the male’s brood pouch, where he fertilizes them and supplies oxygen and nutrients—basically acting like a placenta 🤝. After several weeks of carrying🫃, the male goes into labor and releases dozens to over 1,000 baby seahorses 🌊🐴 (depending on the species).

And the delivery method? Wild. 💥
He uses strong, sneeze-like muscular contractions 🤧 to eject the babies straight into the water 🌊—tiny seahorses launched into life.

In the seahorse world, it’s truly the man’s job to do the carrying 🫩…and honestly, maybe humans should take notes 😂😩

Life beneath the microscope 🔬🌊

This is a microscope view of plankton 🧫, including a larval fish (the one with the big eyes 👀🐟) surrounded by zooplankton 🦐 — an essential food source in the ocean 🌊

I took this photo while studying plankton at Bangor university 🎓🧪. These tiny early life stages 🐣 are critical to marine ecosystems 🌍💙, helping scientists understand food webs 🕸️, fish survival 🐠, and how we can better protect our oceans 🌊♻️💙

It’s acidic and can damage car paint if left too long, especially in the sun ☀️🚗
