We know that people who pick up a sick, injured or orphaned hedgehog do so because they care. But kindness alone cannot provide the specialist treatment these vulnerable wild animals may urgently need.
Members of the public should contact a hedgehog specialist as soon as possible. Please don’t try to care for the hedgehog yourself, don't wait to see if it improves, don't give medication or keep it until you have more time. A hedgehog can deteriorate very quickly, and delays may greatly reduce its chance of survival.
If you find a hedgehog out in the day secure the hedgehog in a box and call us. DO NOT PUT IT BACK till you have spoken to us or your local rescue.
Specialist hedgehog rescues have:
🦔 Trained and experienced carers
🦔 Purpose-built facilities and equipment
🦔 Appropriate medication and treatment
🦔 Support from vets
🦔 The ability to assess, rehabilitate and safely release wild hedgehogs
If you take a hedgehog to a veterinary practice, please ask them to contact a specialist hedgehog rescue promptly. Not every practice has the wildlife experience, facilities or capacity needed for ongoing rehabilitation.
Until help is arranged, place the hedgehog in a secure, high-sided box lined with a towel, keep it somewhere quiet and contact a specialist for advice.
Please help us protect hedgehogs by becoming one of their ambassadors. Share this message with friends, neighbours, community groups and local veterinary teams.
The kindest action is getting the hedgehog to the right people quickly. It gives that little life the very best chance of survival. ❤️
Thank you
