🐝☀️ Beekeeping In Hot Weather: Tips To Keep Your Bees Healthy

As temperatures rise, honey bees work hard to keep their hives cool. Here are some simple tips for fellow beekeepers to help colonies through the heat:

💧 Provide a reliable water source
Bees use water to regulate hive temperature, so make sure they have easy access to a clean water supply.

🏡 Give colonies enough space
A crowded hive can make it harder for bees to stay cool. Consider adding extra space if needed.

🚪 Keep entrances open
Allow good airflow during hot periods and avoid restricting the hive entrance.

🐝 Don’t panic over “bearding”
Seeing bees gathered outside the hive is often a natural cooling behaviour — they’re helping regulate the temperature inside.

🌿 Plan inspections wisely
Work during cooler parts of the day, stay hydrated, and avoid unnecessary disruption during extreme heat.

👥 Look after yourself too
Wear suitable clothing, take breaks, and consider working with a buddy when conditions are hot.

How Do Honeybees Grow Their Queens? 🐝👑

A queen bee isn’t born a queen by chance. When a colony needs a new queen, worker bees select a few young larvae and feed them an exclusive diet of royal jelly – a nutrient-rich substance produced by nurse bees.

While all bee larvae receive royal jelly for a short time, future queens are fed it continuously. This special diet triggers remarkable changes, allowing the queen to develop larger ovaries, a longer lifespan and the ability to lay thousands of eggs.

The chosen larvae are raised in specially built queen cells, often described as peanut-shaped structures. After emerging, the new queen will take over the colony, ensuring its future growth and survival.

Nature’s process of creating a queen is a fascinating example of how a colony works together for the greater good.

During a heatwave, it’s easy to overlook the needs of bees — but extreme temperatures can seriously impact their wellbeing and survival.

Hot, dry conditions can reduce nectar flow, dry out water sources and put added stress on colonies as they work harder to regulate hive temperatures.

Simple ways to help:

* Provide shallow water sources for hydration
* Avoid disturbing hives during peak heat
* Ensure shaded areas are available where possible
* Be mindful of pesticide use in hot weather

Small actions can make a big difference in protecting pollinators during extreme heat.

On Bee Day, we are continuing to highlight some of the fantastic partners helping to support pollinators, biodiversity and environmental awareness through meaningful action.

Today’s spotlight is on Cuprinol, who we have proudly worked alongside on campaigns designed to help people better understand how they can transform outdoor spaces into more bee-friendly environments.
Together, we have promoted practical ways to support pollinators through gardens, community spaces and biodiversity-led outdoor improvements — including the use of colour, planting and habitat-focused design inspired by the Cuprinol Garden Shades range.

Cuprinol are also proud owners of their own beehive, further demonstrating their commitment to sustainability, biodiversity and protecting pollinators for the future.

We have loved collaborating with the team on projects that combine creativity, education and environmental responsibility to inspire positive change.
