Closed Roads and Traffic Cones – Syston Town News
Driving through a legally closed road in the UK is a criminal offence that can result in fines, penalty points, or even imprisonment. Violations, often classified as disobeying traffic signs or obstructing the highway, may incur a TS50 penalty (starting at 3 points) or a fine of up to 51 weeks' imprisonment.
Legal and Safety Consequences:
Prosecution and Penalties: Ignoring "Road Closed" signs can lead to prosecution for driving offences.
Liability: If an accident occurs while ignoring a closure, the driver is liable for damages and faces legal action.
Insurance Risks: Insurance policies may be voided if a driver is acting unlawfully by driving on a restricted road.
Emergency Delays: Driving through, or moving cones/barriers, places both the driver and emergency service providers at risk.
Specifics on Road Closures:
Signage: "Road Closed" signs indicate the road is closed to all traffic, not just specific vehicles.
Duration: Closures under a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order can be valid for up to 6 months.
Access: While some road closures allow for "access only," ignoring signs when no access is permitted is still an offence.
Note: For official information, check the specific Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) or signage in place..
