Our Area Leads, Sadie, and Leah have had a busy month attending important conversations and events focused on improving care, support and su***de prevention across Wales.

From the Co-Creating Excellence in Palliative Care Across Wales conference, to attending the Senedd to discuss the future of palliative and hospice care in Wales, and joining the Cross-Party AGM on su***de prevention, it has been valuable learning, listening and connecting with others.

At Sandy Bear, we believe these conversations are vital. Our work supporting children and young people following the death of someone special means we see first-hand how important it is that individuals and families receive the right support at the right time.

It has been inspiring to hear about the work taking place, learn from experts and professionals in these fields, and see the shared commitment to improving services and outcomes for people and families across Wales.

By coming together, sharing knowledge and ensuring that the voices and needs of those affected are heard, we can continue working towards a future where no child or young person has to face their grief alone. 💚

🌟 Meet the Team Tuesday 🌟

This week, we’d love you to meet Dan, our Business Support Officer, based in our Pembrokeshire office! 💙🐻

While our service delivery teams are busy supporting children, young people and families, Dan helps keep everything ticking along behind the scenes. From administration and organising to ordering, planning, coordinating and helping make sure all those little jobs have a home, Dan plays an important part in keeping the Sandy Bear cogs turning! ⚙️🐻

No two days are ever the same, and there’s always something happening behind the scenes to keep the team supported and our services running smoothly.

We’re really excited to be working with WildLine Studio on a new animated film that will help us tell the Sandy Bear story in a different way 🐻

The Wildline team have kindly offered their creative time and skills to support Sandy Bear, developing an animation that will help explain who we are, the support we provide and why that support matters to bereaved children, young people and families across Wales.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been working together on the story, messaging, and early ideas for the animation, with storyboards now beginning to take shape.
For us, this project is about much more than creating a video. Bereavement can be a difficult subject to talk about, and animation gives us another way to communicate some of those messages in a warm, sensitive, and accessible way.

It will also give us something we can use across our website, social media, fundraising, schools, and community work to help more people understand what Sandy Bear does and why continued support is so important.

We’re incredibly grateful to the team at WildLine Studio for choosing to support Sandy Bear and for the thought and care they are already putting into the project.
We can’t wait to share more as the animation develops. 💛

A huge thank you to WildLine Studio for helping us bring Sandy Bear’s story to life.

ONE WEEK ON… A HUGE THANK YOU! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

It's been a week since the Cardiff Half Marathon, and we wanted to take a moment to say a massive thank you to everyone who chose to run in aid of Sandy Bear! 🐻

Taking on 13.1 miles is an incredible achievement, and we're so grateful to each and every one of you for choosing to support our charity.

Every mile run and every pound raised helps us continue supporting children and young people across Wales following the death of someone special.

Your support helps us make sure that more children and young people have somewhere to turn, someone to talk to, and the support they deserve when navigating grief.

To every runner, fundraiser and supporter who helped make this possible, thank you for being part of something so special. 💛

We're incredibly grateful for your support!

💙 Feedback Friday | Volunteer Spotlight 💙

This week, we’re shining a spotlight on one of the amazing volunteers who gives her time to support Sandy Bear and the families we work with.

Our volunteers are such an important part of what we do. From supporting our sessions and activities to helping us create positive experiences for children and young people following bereavement, they bring their time, skills and kindness to everything they do.

We asked Vikki to tell us a little about her experience of volunteering with Sandy Bear and what it means to her…

💬 "Volunteering with Sandy Bear is something I really enjoy. I love supporting the events and helping out whenever I can, especially during my holidays. Being part of Sandy Bear has also helped me in my role as an ELSA at school and as the school’s Bereavement Champion, where I help to bridge the gap between school and the support sessions at Sandy Bear.

Volunteering has given me more confidence in my work at school and it’s lovely to feel that I’m able to make a difference and support children and families in some way. I really enjoy being part of such a caring community. 💙🐻

Outside of volunteering and school, I love spending time with my dogs, Chester (my GSP) and Willow (my Springer). You can often find us at the beach early in the morning! 🐾🌊"

We’re so grateful to Vikki for everything she brings to Sandy Bear. 💙

Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers, your time, enthusiasm and commitment make such a difference. 🐻💙

✨ What an amazing night at Parc y Scarlets! ✨

We had such a wonderful evening attending the incredible ball organised by Kirsty and Sarah, all in support of Sandy Bear.

The evening was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the work we do, bring people together and, most importantly, raise vital funds to help children and young people who are experiencing grief.

And now for the amazing part…

🎉 £15,661.48 raised for Sandy Bear! 🎉

We truly cannot thank everyone enough for donating, fundraising, joining in with the evening and supporting everything Kirsty and Sarah organised. Your generosity will make a real difference and help us continue to ensure that children and young people don’t have to face their grief alone.

A huge thank you also to our wonderful Sandy Bear staff who attended and helped make the evening so special. We hope you all had as much fun as we did! 🥂✨

And finally, Kirsty and Sarah, thank you! Your hard work, dedication and support mean so much to us, and we are incredibly grateful for everything you have done for Sandy Bear.

Here’s to an amazing night and an even more amazing total! 🎉

Thank you from all of us at Team Sandy Bear. 💙

🌟 Meet the Team Tuesday 🌟

This week, we’re introducing you to Karen! 💙🐻

If you have ever worked alongside Sandy Bear or had support from Sandy Bear in Pembrokeshire then you will know or would have heard about Karen. She is very much the backbone of Sandy Bear. Karen has been part of the Sandy Bear family for an incredible 20 years and has been a huge part of our journey over the years.

From working directly with children and families to now supporting the charity behind the scenes, Karen brings a wealth of experience, passion and dedication to everything she does.

We’re especially grateful for the role Karen has played in helping re-establish Sandy Bear and grow our vision that no child in Wales should have to grieve alone. 💙

Thank you, Karen, for 20 years of dedication and for everything you continue to do for Sandy Bear! 🐻💙

💙 When a child is grieving, school matters. 💙

For many children and young people, school is an important part of their support network. Grief can affect how they feel, behave, concentrate, learn and connect with others, and sometimes, the signs aren’t always obvious.

School staff can play an important role by:

💬 Listening and giving young people space to talk
💙 Understanding that grief can look different for every young person
➡️ Signposting children, young people and families to additional support when they need it.

At Sandy Bear, we work alongside schools to support children and young people following the death of someone special.

Sometimes, simply knowing where to turn can make a young person feel a little less alone. 🐻
