Some loses hurt more than others 💔

This is Sylvie. She came to me about 4 years ago now with her sister. They were living in a rabbit hutch permanently because a fox had taken their 3rd sister. I agreed to take them on and they became a part of my pet flock.

Sylvie was never ever poorly. Her and her sister were so naughty when I got them. They were young and escape artists. I remember getting so frustrated with them I nearly considered rehoming them 🤣🤣

But of course I fell in love with them and I never give up easy! Eventually after about 6 months they settled down and apart from the odd broody spell they were good girls.

Last week Sylvie became extremely unwell, to the point I couldn’t save her and I had to let her go 💔😭

I cried the night before I took her to vets, wishing I could fix her. I cried at the vets on Friday, knowing I couldn’t 🥺 Seeing her little body when she was bought back to me to take home made me cry even more. This little hen has left me feeling emotionally exhausted. A reminder that this never gets easier😞

Vet updates🐓

BRIE 💛

On Friday Brie went in to have her face flushed, the vet decided she had improved significantly and it was unnecessary to operate at this time. This is great news!! However, this could change in the future so I will be keeping a close eye on her face but for now she is a happy girl 🥰

Vet costs: £25 for 7 days antibiotics

FOREST 💚

She is still with us, pottering about! She is poorly but we class this as palliative care so she is just monitored everyday. It won’t be long before we have to say goodbye but for now she is mostly doing normal chicken things 🙏

PENNY 💜

This is Forests sister, also dumped in the woods a few weeks back now. She has been wheezing so she went to the vets. The vet found thickening in her abdomen so we believe she may also have a tumour and is on borrowed time. The vet prescribed some steroids for her wheezing as she has already had antibiotics

Vet costs : £82

These girls are all part of my sanctuary flock and will live their days with me so that I can continue their care until the end 🌈

Thank you to everyone who donated to Brie’s surgery, your donations have gone on the vet bills for these girls after the surgery was cancelled. I’ve also been able to save a bit back incase Brie does need her surgery in the near future.

Let’s talk about the weekend! 😅🐓

25 hours of driving over 4 days, even more hours travelling with Amanda driving! Hundreds of hens saved and multiple boys saved too 💛

After driving down Friday, rescuing a cockerel on my way and then doing the farm straight after, we were running on 0 sleep. Then we get a message at 8am Saturday, 3 boys dumped near Scarborough. A lady caught 2 the night before, didn’t tell anyone until the next day and left the 2 boys in a material carrier overnight in the woods!! I don’t know how these boys weren’t eaten by a fox 🦊

This then became an emergency as 1 boy was still wild so I had to drive there straight after the farm whilst FPC Poultry Rescue UK and Dennis Duck Rescue C.I.C rehomed hens all day. 3 hour round trip to get this boy safe but it left us at breaking point.

Myself and Amanda cried on our journeys back home separately. Her from Holbeach collection point and me from Scarborough. We were exhausted physically and mentally 😞

Please always contact the rescue for advice before trying to attempt capture unless you can take them home yourself. These boys were chased relentlessly to catch them, which is why it was unsuccessful. Never chase, always trap or wait till night time to catch from roosting.

We had planned our weekend very carefully so that we could get to these boys in Scarborough on the Sunday and still rehome all the hens, this would’ve given us an opportunity to sleep first!!

They would’ve been safer in a tree overnight than in a carrier 😤
Even though you may think you’re doing the right thing, you may actually be putting the rescue involved under immense pressure 😩

One of these boys has come home with me, he will be looking for his forever home 🏡💛

Side Quest 🐓

This weekend I travelled down to England to help with saving hundreds of hens from slaughter 💛

Friday was going well, my journey was only taking me 9 hours 🤣 2 hours from Amanda’s and I get a message from her saying there is a dumped cockerel near Goole. Nobody could go and it was a slight detour for me so I decided I would go. I didn’t want to be thinking about him being all alone whilst we were at the farm overnight

A lovely lady waited for me to show me where he was, I got there and she was literally sat in the woods watching him as she was too scared to leave him, she was frozen! 🥶

This boy was sat on a bent over thick trunk, head in his feathers fast asleep. Honestly I could’ve cried he looked like the saddest boy in the world 😭

I waited for it to get darker and then with my red light head torch, I crawled through the tiny gap in the bushes beneath him. When I got hold of his legs, he didn’t even flinch or scream🥺 he opened his beak but no sound came out he was just in shock 😣

You can tell I’m tired, upside down headtorch and not much of a smile although I though my face was 🤣🤣

He’s now safe at FPC Poultry Rescue UK where he cheered up after seeing a little while leghorn hen in the hospital crate next to him 💛🥰

Runaway chicken?! 🐔

This beautiful girl was seen running around Kirriemuir for a few days, escaping everyone who tried to catch her! I saw this on Facebook and was thankful to find out Chloe Spray was nearby and willing to go out after work to try and catch her.

On Monday Chloe headed out and found her hiding under a bush. Armed with 4 other local people keen to help catch her, everyone worked together to get this girl safe. Chloe managed to grab her before she could escape again 🤣

Thank you to all the local people wanting to help get her safe and a big thank you to Chloe for giving up her time to save me the long journey. She stayed for a sleepover at Chloe’s before I collected her. Eventually she will go to a forever home 💛

Does anyone fancy rehoming a bit of a naughty boy? 🤭

This is Dancer ✨

Dancer was dumped with his brother back in June and is going through his naughty stage. He likes to give me a hard peck sometimes, but it’s just raging hormones. I expect him to grow out of this and I think having hens would be a good redirection for him. Other times Dancer likes a stroke and you can pick him up on his terms

I’m looking for someone who is experienced with a bit of a k**b cockerel or someone who has land where he can just do his own thing with his girlfriends 👯‍♀️

He cannot go with any other cockerels 🐓

He is approximately 8-12months old and he has little spurs coming through

I’m sure he’s sick of being stuck at the rescue 😞 There must be someone out there that doesn’t mind a misunderstood boy!
