A phone call from a pharmacist could help reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.

BHF-funded research presented at the British Cardiovascular Society (BCS) found 7 in 10 people got their cholesterol under control with regular follow-up support. These calls helped people stay on track with their medication and understand their treatment. Virtual volunteering offers opportunities for people everywhere to make a difference, whatever their schedule, location or circumstances.

For Ginny, it provides a flexible and rewarding way to support the British Red Cross. After retiring, she chose to volunteer as a way to use her spare time meaningfully. As part of her role, Ginny researches and writes listings for pre-loved items sold on eBay to help raise funds.

“It’s a way of fundraising remotely. There aren’t any Red Cross shops near me – the closest one is a 30-minute drive away. With virtual volunteering, I don’t even need to leave the house” she says.

Even though she volunteers from home, Ginny still feels a strong sense of connection to her fellow volunteers – regular online meet-ups keep the team spirit alive. And it means volunteering can be more accessible to more people, getting more people involved, and bringing their valuable skills and support to causes that matter, wherever they are.
