Autumn is a very busy time of year for our community tree nursery as that's when most of our native tree seeds ripen. Some species have a very short window for collecting seeds, and the timings vary slightly from year to year, depending on the weather.

This year, many species went to seed earlier than usual due to the draught and heatwaves we had over the summer, so some of our seed collections happen at very short notice.

Here are a few pictures of some of our wonderful volunteers who helped us with collecting seeds at Dodnaze earlier this month. Seed collecting is always a very joyous occasion, and it helps folks connect with their local environment, learn about trees, and spend nurturing time outdoors in nature and meeting new people.

We returned to High Hirst Woodmeadow Project to collect more seed on Sunday. Thanks to everyone who came along and helped out 💚

We collected more hazelnuts, rowan and guelder rose berries, and hawthorn haws from the meadow. Then we moved uphill to Dodd Naze recreation ground, where we collected grey alder cones, hornbeam seed, scots pine cones, and more haws.

When all has been seived and processed, and the berries have rotted down to replicate natural processes rather than the usual very time-consuming extraction methods, the resulting seed will be stratified and grown on at our nursery in Mytholmroyd.

We had a nice, varied day at our tree nursery at Daisy Bank today.

First, we finished weeding the bed of oak saplings. Then we gathered some more hawthorn and holly berries. Finally, we pricked out the broom seedlings, as proudly displayed in this photo. When grown on, the broom will be good for planting in hedgerows, and also for planting underneath telephone lines and suchlike, because it won't get overly tall and problematic.

Friday is our regular volunteer day at Daisy Bank. Please get in touch if you're able to join us, even if only for a few hours, it would be hugely appreciated.

We collect seeds locally which we process, germinate and grow at our community tree nursery to use for hedge and tree planting projects to help reduce flooding as part of local natural flood management schemes, tree and hedgerow planting projects to create wildlife habitats and improve biodiversity.

Following on from the extensive Himalayan Balsam removal we did at Rawtonstall Wood. We have installed fascines (tightly bundled rough brash from locally coppiced material) on the steep banking at top of Rawtonstall Wood. This will allow for vegetation to establish to help stabilise the banking and reduce erosion.

We are also currently working on 40m of earth bunding and we will be installing 6 leaky dams to hold water on site during storms and extreme weather events to help prevent flooding further downstream.

This work is kindly being funded as part of the Calderdale Natural Flood Management (NFM) Grant Scheme.

We had a good, productive day at our tree nursery at Daisy Bank today.

In the morning, we weeded the bed of oak saplings. In the afternoon, we planted the hazelnuts collected at High Hirst last weekend.

We had a lovely seed collection event at High Hirst Woodmeadow Project on Sunday with the weather on our side. We enjoyed the gentle pace with lots of chatter and laughter while being closely watched by a curious Robin.

We collected Hazelnuts, Rowan berries, Guelder Rose and haws to grow at our Daisy Bank community tree nursery in Mytholmroyd. These trees will be used to improve biodiversity for wildlife as part of local woodland creation, hedgerow planting and natural flood management projects once the trees are large enough to plant out on site.

This was a Hebden Royd Green Network collaborative event with Hebden Royd Town Council and there will be more collaborations to come in the near future.

While some of us collected seeds, others sowed Yellow Rattle seeds collected earlier in the year at the top of the hay meadow and did some maintenance work on the path to ensure it remains accessible for everyone.

High Hirst Woodmeadow is a very special and diverse space with so much to offer the community as well as a much needed safe refuge for wildlife. We are very lucky to have this amazing place at our doorstep and so many people that so generously contribute their time to help make it what it is. We highly recommend getting involved with their volunteer day every second Sunday of the month and their various additional activities throughout the year.
