We collected elderberries at our Daisy Bank nursery yesterday, as the sheep gazed on in mild curiosity. The berries have to be gathered when they're fully ripened - black not purple - or their seed won't be viable. Thus begins the next generation of elder trees, to be grown on site.

Friday is our regular volunteer day at Daisy Bank. Please get in touch if you're able to join us, even if only for a few hours, it would be hugely appreciated.

We collect seeds locally which we process, germinate and grow at our community tree nursery to use for hedge and tree planting projects to help reduce flooding as part of local natural flood management schemes, tree and hedgerow planting projects to create wildlife habitats and improve biodiversity.

The prolonged heatwave and drought has been a real challenge at our Daisy Bank tree nursery this year - and not just because all our watering is done by hand. So of course the recent rainfall is hugely welcome. We have finally been able to plant out these hazels, grown from locally sourced hazelnuts which we collected at High Hirst Woodmeadow Project with volunteers last autumn. Hopefully there's more rain yet to come - ideally arriving outside daylight hours in a slow and steady drizzle 😉🤞

We took adavantage of the slightly cooler weather last week, to catch up on some urgent potting up and planting out!

The heatwaves have been very challenging this year. We are heavily reliant on lots of shade netting, in some cases double or even triple layered and very careful water management. Our tree nursery is completely off-grid and our water supply comes from a small spring.

Rawtonstall Wood - cleared of Himalayan Balsam. It's been a bit of a slog, but we got there in the end. A massive thank you from the bottom of our roots to everyone who got involved. We really couldn't have done it without all the help we got from so many wonderful folks who generously gave their time for this project 💚 Altogether, we spent over 900 hours clearing 6.28 hectares. There will be a final sweep through the whole site in a few weeks' time, just in case any more balsam seeds germinate and to make sure we haven't missed any!

Of course, many balsam seeds will remain dormant from previous years, so we'll be back to keep on top of it next year. With time, native woodland species like red campion, bluebells, and woodrush will find their way back to fill the undergrowth.

Here are some of the living leaky dams we built earlier this year in Warland as part of our natural flood management projects in Calderdale. We are very pleased to see they are establishing nicely and will continue to serve their purpose for years to come. As they grow, they will also provide vital habitat for nature.

Our brilliant apprentice, Fraser, was on raised platform building duty a few weeks ago 🛠

We quickly put together another raised platform from wooden pallets and fencing posts to safely store our seed trays and cell grown trees out of reach voles, mice, and birds to prevent any more losses.

The platform was also covered with shade netting to keep the birds out and provide some much needed shade to prevent the trays from drying out too quickly.

Thanks very much to everyone who came to help out at Daisy Bank community tree nursery on Friday 🌱

We finished weeding the little oak saplings, grown from acorns collected by volunteers from Slow The Flow at Hardcastle Crags last year. Then, after lunch, we collected broom seed pods from the heathland uphill from the nursery - in the nick of time, because the pods are starting to pop!

We've been balsam bashing at a site up near the top of Cragg Vale this week. The balsam was mostly growing in and amongst rushes this time, which was a bit fiddly but less stingy than the nettles we usually have to contend with.

It took all day, but we were successfully able to clear the whole field, which was very satisfying. A big thank you to everyone who came along to help out!

Our next balsam bashing dates will be Tuesday 28th and Thursday 30th July at Rawtonstall Woods in Hebden Bridge.
