On the last two Monday evenings, our Club has held its annual Youth Speaks competitions at Bishop’s Stortford College, ably organised by Rob Whitaker, one of our Corporste members, with help from some of his colleagues at TeesLaw.
The Senior competition was held on 10th November, with 5 Teams from Bishop’s Stortford College, The Bishop’s Stortford High School and Herts and Essex High School. They teams spoke on such diverse subjects as The Pursuit of Happiness, and Do you feel lucky? All teams were of an exceptionally high standard, and the three judges - Rosie Howatson, Victoria Kerr, and Nick Hyde - had a very difficult task I. Choosing the winner, which was the team from Herts and Essex High School, whose subject was The Truth about Lying. Members of all teams were presented with a certificate and the winning team was presented with a trophy by President Brian Morgan.
The Intermediate competition was held on 17th November, with 7 teams from the same schools as above, plus Hockerill Anglo European College and St Mary’s Catholic School. Again, the teams were all of a very high standard, speaking on such topics as Speak Up and The End of Homework. The judges again had a hard task choosing the winning team, which was again Herts & Essex High School, who received a trophy. Two splendid evenings and congratulations to the winners.

The two teams are pictured below with President Brian Morgan

In October, we had the pleasure of hearing Lesley Calder, of DKMS, a bone marrow donor register charity, speak to us about the charity and how she is involved. Lesley benefitted from a bone marrow transplant in 2019 from his sister, when she had acute myeloid leukaemia. Lesley is now fit and well, has this year climbed Ben Nevis and walked the Highlands Coast to coast to raise funds for the diary, and is dedicating her life to enabling others in need to benefit from a bone marrow transplant. Her story was an inspiration.Read more about the charity at https://www.dkms.org.uk/get-involved/programmes/herts-essex

Last Friday, members of the Club took part in a bucket collection at Stansted Airport, organised by Young Lives vs Cancer, which gives help and support to young sufferers. It is a very worthwhile charity, which we were pleased to support. The photo shows members of the club, together with two welcome helpers from TeesLaw.

A couple of weeks ago, we had the pleasure of welcoming the District 1240 Governor, Mark Williamson, to our lunch meeting. He gave us an encouraging and interesting talk on Rotary’s image and plans for the future, including the importance of Corporate membership, which the Club is currently pursuing with enthusiasm.
See www.bsrotary.org for more information on the Club and on Corporate Membership.

Here's some exciting news for all local businesses and organisations: you've seen the regular posts on our activities and now we want to tell you about a new way to join Rotary and share our experience - Corporate Membership. Our members know how much Rotary has enriched their lives and this is a chance for you to have that opportunity.
Our Club is eager to attract new Corporate Members into the Club, which enables a business or other organisation to pay a single annual membership subscription to our Club, which is then available to up to three other people within the business, meaning the primary member and others can all be actively involved in our Club’s meetings and activities - just right for highly pressured businesses with the desire to help but with a shortage of available time.
You can see the range of our activities on our website - and perhaps, if you join, you'll have a few new ideas of your own!
Corporate Membership offers the opportunity for business and social networking. It can help you put your Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) plans into action.
We see Corporate Membership as a way forward in a changing world, which will benefit all Rotarians and the community they serve. We are holding an event at 6 pm on 4th November at Bishop’s Stortford Golf Club for invited representatives of local businesses, charities and other organisations to learn more about this initiative. If you would like an invitation to the event, please email us through the contact page on Corporate Membership on our website: www.bsrotary.org. The article also contains a link to our Corporate Membership Brochure.

Rotary clubs throughout the world are committed to serving their local, National and International communities in a number of ways. We welcome membership enquiries from like-minded people

A few weeks ago we were delighted to induct a new member to our Club - Fran Waterhouse. Fran’s husband, Rick, has been a Club member for many years and it is great to have her amongst our number now in her own right. Fran is already proving, by her willingness to volunteer, that she is an asset to the Club.

Great dinner meeting last night, with a splendid talk and presentation by 17 year old Annabelle Atter, who told us about her trip to India in August with Hertfordshire Girlguiding - which had been a memorable experience for her. A very mature and confident presentation from a teenager!
