An enjoyable morning at Wheelers Lane Allotments delivering a hands-on 'Introduction to Soil Heath' workshop for plotholders.

The session introduced participants to simple, low cost ways they can support the soil ecosystem on their allotments. After last week's high temperatures it was clear that plots where soil is covered by mulch we're looking much happier than those with bare soil. It's all about the mulch 🤎.

It's been a joy to be with Midland Mencap for the past couple of Tuesdays, working with the gardening group to set up their new wormery and compost bin. These will provide interesting and therapeutic tasks throughout the seasons, as well as some beautiful compost to nurture the soil in their planters.

With a bit of thought, the composting process can become an accessible activity for everyone. The group ripped up chard leaves, sprayed water on shredded paper, counted buckets, and mixed ingredients. Some members of the group enjoyed watching the worms move, and smelling the freshly cut grass clippings. It was a real team effort, good for soul and soil 🪱🤎🌱

Great to be at Kings Heath & Cofton Nurseries: Birmingham Parks and Greenspaces today talking about soil health and composting, surrounded by gorgeous plants 🌱🌼. The staff are very knowledgeable, it's well worth a visit!

One of the highlights was this young microbiologist carefully preparing her microscope slide and finding a beautiful nematode 🤎.
