We are deeply sorry to have lost a valued member of our club, Brian Cooper. Our President Angeles Walford writes:

“I am so privileged to have met Brian when he was still an active member of The Rotary Club of Morden. He was an extremely intelligent man with charm, good manners and wit.

Brian was a very loyal and committed member of the club. His particular passion was the Christmas Sleigh. In the 1980s when my children were small the sleigh came down our road and we were mesmerised. The first time we saw it we couldn’t believe our eyes. For many years that was when Christmas really begun. Never could I have imagined that all these years later it is also one of my passions. Thank you Brian on behalf of all the families that you have given so much pleasure to for so many years. Thank you for your loyalty and your unassuming presence. It’s people like Brian who have shaped my love of Rotary. He was a role model, the quiet man who got on with the job, a man that understood ‘Service above self’. He gave so much. The club will miss him very much.”

Brian was a Chartered Surveyor and partner in Finch & Co estate agents in Merton Park. He was a man of many talents: athletics, cycling, piano, undersea diving, woodworker, viticulturist and fluent French speaker. He was always impeccably dressed and a real gentleman.

Our condolences to Brian’s widow Margot and their extensive family. His funeral will take place on Wednesday 8th April in Morden and donations to the Alzheimer’s Society welcomed. Please private message for further details.

With the fifth Monday of a month being our club’s social night we held an Introduction to Rummikub evening at the Old Rutlishians in Merton Park with attendees aged 13 and upwards. There was also Scrabble and Cribbage. Now that a number of us have learnt the basics of Rummikub we hope to plan future meet-ups to play.

Our President Angeles gave a talk about gift wrapping with fabric at Wimbledon Guild today. After her talk there was time for audience members to have a go themselves, which proved popular with one describing it as “exciting” and another as “positive”.

Our President Angeles and President Elect Shuile were guest speakers at today’s “The Gentle Art of Giving” event with Merton Connected at Vestry Hall, Mitcham to celebrate International Women’s Day. Both drew on their work and volunteer experiences. Angeles highlighted Rotary International’s successes in End Polio Now and the ongoing need for ShelterBox giving relief when disasters hit.

Today we were proud to have entrants in the Rotary Cluster 6 finals of Rotary Young Musician (Salisbury) and Rotary Young Chef (Maidstone). Martin prepared a very fine two-course meal for Young Chef whilst Hasan, we’re delighted to say, was runner-up in the Instrumental section of Young Musician. Well done both.
