Our Nature Walks happen every week in Inverness and every second week in Nairn, Forres, Elgin and Aberlour. They are free of charge and for many of us, they can feel invaluable too! 90 mins of wander and chat, with half an hour of that time stopping for a cuppa and snack - all provided. Posters with dates and places attached for all areas - the walks run from 1.30 to 3pm.

NAIRN FAMILY GREENWAY

Today is International Day of Families (www.un.org/en/observances/international-day-of-families) and Green Hive is thrilled to announce the official launch of the project.

WHAT IS IT?

The Nairn Family Greenway project will promote the existing pedestrian/cycling pathway that runs for approximately two kilometres between the parks at Riverside on the south-east side of Nairn and Viewfield to the west. The route gives convenient car-free access to public amenities and leisure opportunities across our friendly seaside town. The Scottish Government (through its Whole Family Wellbeing Programme) is providing grant-support for six local organisations to run activities on (and around) the pathway - activities that are fun and engaging for families in Nairn and Nairnshire.

WHEN'S IT HAPPENING?

The Nairn Family Greenway project launches on 15 May 2026 (International Day of Families), and will be actively promoted for one year.

WHO'S INVOLVED?

The six partners delivering Nairn Family Greenway activities will be:

- Blue Space Highland
- Green Hive
- N4H
- Nairn County Community F.C.
- Nairn Museum
- National Autistic Society (Nairn branch)

We will also be speaking with local, regional and national organisations and service-providers with interests (or potential interests) in the project and its outcomes, including DYW Highland, Generations Working Together, Help For Heroes, Highland Council, Highland Mindfulness Group, Highland Hospice, Highland Senior Citizens Network, Highland Yoga Collective, High Life Highland, HITRANS, Home-Start East Highland, The Little Theatre, Mikeysline, Millbank Primary School, Nairn Academy, Nairn Access Panel, Nairn Allotments Society, Nairn Arts Society, Nairn Baptist Church, Nairn Beach Wheelchairs, Nairn BID, Nairn Book & Arts Festival, Nairn Coastal Rowing Club, Nairn Common Good, Nairn Community and Arts Centre, Nairn County Cricket Club, Nairn Citizens Advice Bureau, Nairn Dunbar Golf Club, Nairn Food Nest, Nairn Free Church, Nairn Kayak Club, Nairn Literary Institute, Nairn Men’s Shed, Nairn Park Run, Nairn PLAY, Nairn River Community Council, Nairn Road Runners, Nairn Rotary, Nairn St. Ninian Bowling Club, Nairn St. Ninian F.C., Nairn Sailing Club, Nairn Tennis Club, Nairn Thunderbolts Mini Rugby Club, Nairn United Reformed Church, Nairn WASPS, New Start Highland, NICE Nairn, Paddle Bliss, Police Scotland, Renew 32, Riverside F.C., Rosebank Primary School, St. Columba's Nairn, St. Mary's RC Church Nairn, Team Hamish, Wheels in Nairnshire and many others.

Our hope is the project will help to support the important work done by these organisations, generating opportunities for cross-working, and circulating valuable information about the families who already depend on our services, or who might benefit from improved access to those services in the future.

WHAT DO WE MEAN BY 'FAMILY'?

By β€˜family’ we mean whatever you mean when you use the word β€˜family’. The Whole Family Wellbeing Programme defines 'family' in its broadest sense, and the project in Nairn is designed to be inclusive for every kind of adoptive, foster, kinship, extended and composite family grouping. Our overriding aim will be to encourage good intergenerational practice - through the provision of activities that foster mutual exchange, cooperation, support and understanding across different age groups.

WHY ARE WE DOING IT?

- To improve access to affordable activities that families can enjoy together
- To improve access to healthy activities for children and young people
- To improve access to health and wellbeing opportunities
- To improve access to public events and social activities
- To improve access to volunteering opportunities
- To improve access to structured learning and skills development opportunities
- To improve connectivity across Nairn through a link that bypasses the A96
- To improve access to cafes, shops and other businesses and essential services

Our hope is the project will feed into the forthcoming Riverside Development Plan, now being taken forward on behalf of Highland Council by NICE Nairn - providing impetus for longer-term improvements to the playing fields, the skate park, the pump track and other facilities at Riverside. We also hope it can be used as leverage (inc. potential match funding) for bids to larger funders for improvements to the toilets and changing facilities, leisure facilities, etc. at the Links, as well as ecological and biodiversity improvements at the seafront, along the banks of the River Nairn and within the green spaces at Riverside and Viewfield.
