I'm currently reading the book "Landsmart" by Tom Heap. Tom is due to attend Monty LitFest to talk about the book on June 14th, and MEGs contribution to LitFest is that we are organising a "Book Club" event to discuss the book just prior to the Lit Fest on June 8th
Our "Book Club" will be in the Dragon, on Monday 8th June, at 7.30, all welcome.
It is a good read and I am learning a lot. For instance there is quite a bit on peat and I knew managing our peat bogs was important, but not how important. When some of the Fens were being drained around 1850s engineers drove a long wooden stake through the peat into the clay below, and have been using that ever since to measure how much the peat has been shrinking and eroding. Ground level is now 4m lower than it was in 1850, and most of that peat, mainly carbon, is now turned into CO2 in the atmosphere.
Land use is critical as both a cause of, and solution to Climate Change.
Tom goes through all the uses and potential uses we have for land, and how these need to be balanced to deliver food, water, energy, carbon sequestration, construction materials, tourism and more. The book is full of promising examples of good practice as well as some of our past mistakes. There are some phenomenal farming stories featured.
Please do buy and read your copy and come along to the book club event on 8th June (7.30 in the Dragon) as well as book to hear Tom talk on Sunday 14th June at 2pm.
You can buy your copy of Landsmart at Eaves & Lord bookshop
I thoroughly recommend it.
