Eric's wet and windy walk for dementia awareness
Montgomery Dementia Friends had planned an autumn memory walk for October 3rd, which sadly couldn’t take place because of the weather conditions. However, the group’s Chairman, Eric Fairbrother, determined to complete the walk himself, come what may. Eric walked the route in the wet and wind, from Arthur Street, down Chirbury Road and around the Lymore Estate, returning to finish at Montgomery Institute.
Eric said, “I care very much for people who are living with Dementia. They need our support and the purpose of the walk was to raise awareness of Dementia. I think dementia doesn’t currently receive as much attention in the media as it should. Dementia affects about a million people in the UK and that's rising, so raising awareness will help.”
“Dementia also affects families and carers. Dementia Friends groups like Montgomery’s exist to support people living with dementia and their families by organising events such as Memory Lane events and singalongs, and items such as newspapers from previous times in order to stimulate the memory and recall. All Dementia Friends groups operate under the auspices of the Alzheimer's Society.”
Montgomery Dementia Friends plan to hold another walk on an alternative date, probably next year, so keep an eye out for further details and information on how to join in.
