Description:

JDK Lloyd (1900-1978) was the first Chairman of Montgomery Civic Society and a champion of the town’s history. Throughout his life he collected memories from older generations that described what the town was like in the nineteenth century. These were published in 1970 and reveal a town that on the surface is like the one we live in today, with a rich history, larger than life characters and grand events. But it also reveals a darker side of poverty, drunkenness and violence. The talk will look at these stories and illustrate them with photographs and other material from the Old Bell’s archive.
