A FREE weekly, 5km, timed friendly run at 9am, every Saturday, come rain or shine!

12/06/2026

The weather forecast delivered to me by Batukhan (probably Batty to her friends but I haven’t dared) is for a cloudy but pleasant 13C, and not a drop of rain at our Conkers parkrun.

As always, thank you to everyone that has volunteered, we just have a gap for someone to join the finish tokens team if anyone would like to do that.

The course after the last day or two is going to be a little damp with puddles to tiptoe round or run through whichever way you prefer. If a slightly muddy course is not your thing, then see comment above on finish tokens team.

Two big welcomes for tomorrow. The GoodGym shindig 2026 are at the National Forest YHA which as you know sits right on our course so I am sure that we will see many of their members join us to run or walk our beautiful trails. We have a couple of their lovely team volunteering with us tomorrow so a special thanks to them. If you have never heard of GoodGym, it is an organisation that combines exercise with volunteering. For example, running, walking or cycling to a community volunteering requirement. If you want to know more, I am sure their members will help, or maybe you fancy setting up your local one. www.goodgym.org.
It is also the third Artisan & Farmers market taking place at the Conkers Waterside car park and in part of the café. You can’t miss it, it is right behind Emily (tomorrow’s RD) when she delivers her run brief. Do have a look around it; there is good food, wine and many other things on sale.

The team at Conkers parkrun have discovered the quickest way to replace the finish tokens, get Roger to do the token sorting. They are in such a bad state that they will not stack. Tokens were sorted on Sunday, new ones ordered on Monday and delivered on Thursday. These have a cost from our meagre funds, we are £80 lighter in our funds so please do not walk off with them, bend them or do whatever else makes them tricky to sort and use.

Regulars at Conkers parkrun will have seen our recent posts in conjunction with Long Lane medical practice on a number of issues such as knowing your body – signs of cancer, men’s mental health and one for those suffering from Aneurysms and the support group. Next month we have one on ‘loneliness’ which I am aware is something that Conkers parkrun does help. I am always mentioning that the start area is always a great place for social interaction. Then someone mentioned a few days ago that in the café post parkrun, you hardly ever see a mobile phone, everyone is chatting, so do not go home to an empty house if you don’t have to, pop into the café, it does get busy.

Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow at the brief, on the run and walk and of course in the café.

Have a great weekend.

I can absolutely guarantee 💯 that you'll have a great time. A quote from a volunteer last week
"I haven't stopped laughing...." 😆
It's not just physical exercise that releases those happy hormones.😃

Don't forget that this Saturday we have the Curly Magpie Artisan market in the Conkers Waterside car park. Lots to see (and buy) after your parkrun.

They will be in the area outside the cafe and inside part of the cafe. It has no impact on what we do apart from a few parking places.

With the promises of ‘El Nino’ reversing direction along the Ashby canal, I thought I had better check with my friend Anushka at the Met office info desk. The best that she can do for us for Saturday at 9am is a 50% chance that we will NOT have any light rain. She has promised a nice temperature of around 13/14C with a warm breeze from the South East. Sounds perfect to me.

The first National Forest 75K Ultra is on on Saturday, they have a water station in the far corner of the Waterside car park. Their route takes in the end part of our course with their first runners coming through at about 9.30. These will be their leading runners at around the 30 mile mark for them. Their route takes them through the camping and caravan park and joins us at Moira Junction (our first / last marshal). If we keep as much to the left and the NF runners keep to the right nothing will be a problem. When you leave the funnel and you want to gather for a chat try and leave them a clear path. Once they reach the car park they will head to their water station.

Ceri is your run director tomorrow and has an almost full volunteer roster. We could still do with the following:
Finish tokens x 1
Funnel manager x 1
And if any Conkers regular wants to have a bash at the report let us know.

Next Saturday on the 13th we have the market back with all the lovely products for sale.

Have a great parkrun, listen to Ceri and the marshals and enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Following on from our last post, here's some information from HBA Support about symptoms to be aware of — and crucially, how to tell the difference between an everyday headache and something that needs urgent attention.
Roger x

*From HBA*
Most aneurysms cause no symptoms at all. In rare cases, a growing aneurysm may press on nearby nerves and cause:

Headaches
Blurred or double vision
Pain above or behind the eye
Weakness or numbness on one side of the face
Difficulty speaking or concentrating
If any of these are ongoing or new to you, it's worth mentioning to your GP — especially if you have a family history of aneurysms.

When to call 999 immediately

A ruptured aneurysm is a medical emergency. It is very different from a normal headache. The key warning sign is:

👉 A sudden, severe headache that comes on in seconds — unlike anything you've felt before. People often describe it as the worst headache of their life.

This may also come with:

Stiff neck
Sensitivity to light
Nausea or vomiting
Confusion or loss of consciousness
Call 999 straight away. Do not wait to see if it passes.

*** Many thanks to Nikki and Rebecca at HBA and of course Dr. Hanna Robbins from Long Street medical practice. ***

You can also find them on Instagram, but the link for that was beyond me. :)

You may have spotted parkrunners in light blue t-shirts at Conkers parkrun recently — they were raising awareness for HBA Support, the UK's only national charity for people and families affected by brain aneurysms. The team at HBA with support from Dr. Hanna Robbins have put together some information that you may find helpful in recognising the signs.
Roger

What is a brain aneurysm? A brain aneurysm is a small bulge in a blood vessel in the brain, caused by a weak spot in the vessel wall. Around 1 in 30 people have one — and the vast majority never cause any problems. Most people live their whole lives without ever knowing they have one.

In a very small number of cases, an aneurysm can rupture. This is serious, but when aneurysms are found early, most are treatable. Hundreds of people are successfully treated on the NHS every month.

What can you do?

Know your family history. If two or more close blood relatives have had a brain aneurysm, mention this to your GP — you may be eligible for screening.

Keep your blood pressure in a healthy range.

If you smoke, reducing or stopping lowers your risk.
No one should face this alone. Visit hbasupport.org or read community stories at hbasupport.org/support
