As many of you know the culmination of Gala Day is the torchlight procession from the Town Hall to Hope Johnstone Park and the end of evening bonfire.

With the current spell of dry weather concerns have been raised about the bonfire this year. Advice was sought from the fire service and the Gala committee began putting extra safeguards in place. However we were unsure whether it was wise to proceed and this has been the source of much discussion over the last few days.

We appreciate that the procession and bonfire are a major part of the day, more so this year as Gala celebrates its 75th anniversary. The desire to uphold years of tradition is extremely strong, but we find ourselves having to listen to our heads rather than our hearts. The safety of our community and the surrounding area must come first. We feel it would be foolhardy to go ahead with the torchlight procession and bonfire this year.

We hope you understand this was a difficult decision to make and know that we share in your disappointment.
