Mertoncil

Mertoncil User-led Deaf and Disabled people's organisation based in The London Borough of Merton. To Identify and challenge discrimination faced by disabled people.

Our Objectives:
To promote the independence and inclusion of all disabled people in Merton. To encourage disabled people, our allies, carers and supporters to work together to achieve change locally. Merton CIL celebrates the broad diversity of disabled people and highlights the multiple barriers to participation that many people face. We positively engage people from diverse communities, such as

members of Black, Asian and minority ethnic groups, older people, LGB groups, who often face additional barriers, discrimination and exclusion. Merton CIL also engages with people from hard-to-reach & newly emerging groups from a diverse range of backgrounds, to better understand their experiences and to identify effective approaches to ensuring their views are heard. Merton CIL provide advice, advocacy, and peer support. Paid staff and volunteers support these services

Our Access Champions are full of determination to make Merton and beyond accessible for all. We appreciate their hard work so much, and we couldn’t be prouder of them for winning a ‘Volunteer Team of the Year’ award at the Merton Partnership Civic Pride Awards last night. More pics will follow, but here’s a taster for now. You can learn about their main achievements on our website: https://www.mertoncil.org.uk/news/access-champions-shortlisted/

Thank you, too, to for their mammoth efforts to organise everything, from the nominations process to the ceremony. You must be exhausted. Please know that we had fun!

Merton Citizens hosted a fantastic local elections assembly on Monday night. Candidates agreed to our asks relating to housing, work and wages and digital exclusion.

We are incredibly proud of our policy and campaigns trainee Amelia who co-chaired the event and spoke about the impact of digital exclusion. Slide across for a short video.

We are also proud of Merton CIL member and Access Champion Fatheha who have a powerful testimony about her experience of digital exclusion.

Thank you to the Merton CIL members and other local residents who came along to support the event.

Merton Council’s Walking, Wheeling and Cycling Strategy - have just published their Walking, Wheeling and Cycling Strategy 2026-2035, and we are proud of and grateful to our Access Champions who helped to shape the strategy and convinced the Council to include the word ‘wheeling’ in the title and throughout.
