User-led Deaf and Disabled people's organisation based in The London Borough of Merton. To Identify and challenge discrimination faced by disabled people.

Our Objectives:
To promote the independence and inclusion of all disabled people in Merton. To encourage disabled people, our allies, carers and supporters to work together to achieve change locally. Merton CIL celebrates the broad diversity of disabled people and highlights the multiple barriers to participation that many people face. We positively engage people from diverse communities, such as

members of Black, Asian and minority ethnic groups, older people, LGB groups, who often face additional barriers, discrimination and exclusion. Merton CIL also engages with people from hard-to-reach & newly emerging groups from a diverse range of backgrounds, to better understand their experiences and to identify effective approaches to ensuring their views are heard. Merton CIL provide advice, advocacy, and peer support. Paid staff and volunteers support these services

Join our team! We are looking for a Service Manager to join our Senior Leadership Team and lead our Casework Services. This is an exciting opportunity for a Disabled person with strong HR and service management experience to support our high-quality Information and Advice and Speaking Up (casework) Services rooted in the Social Model of Disability, Disability Justice, Equity and Human Rights. This role sits within our Senior Leadership Team and is central to the smooth running and growth of our organisation.

We collaborated with Merton plus today, to work on making the day more accessible for all. Updates will be shared closer to the day.

Merton Pride will be help on the 5th September from 10am, starting at Morden Hall Park and ending at Merton Abbey Mills. We would love to see you there!

The Merton CIL team came together for a brilliant away day spent reflecting, listening and planning together. We explored what community development means in practice, shared ideas for strengthening local connections and left feeling energised about our work ahead. Incredible conversations, collaboration and commitment to achieving change across the team.
Thank you to Friends of South Park Gardens for hosting us in the pavilion and thank you to KICKIN KREOLE & Bliss In The Park for a delicious lunch.

Yesterday, a member of our Policy and Campaign Team, Amelia, visited FROG Learning CIC as part of our work to try to understand better the needs of young Disabled people in Merton. FROG Learning is an organisation which supports young adults with learning disabilities to lead fulfilling lives through horticulture and outdoor learning. The visit was immensely enjoyable. Thank you, FROG Learning!.

We are proud members of a campaign group called More Loos for Merton, which, in turn, connects us with Age UK London, the London Loo Alliance, and the British Toilet Association. We played our part in pushing for the reinstatement of public toilets at Morden Underground Station, and are involved in a raft of efforts to improve public toilet provision in Merton more widely.

On Saturday, there was a clear consensus amongst the public in Mitcham town centre! Thank you so much to everyone who spoke with us, placed a magnet on our board, and signed our petition.

This Disabled Pride month, our Craftivism & Chat session focused on creating self portraits with a focus on our identities. We experimented with different materials to create our portraits. Swipe for more info on each➡️➡️

Jolanta - different colours and shapes of life. Sometimes you want to fly up and you are not able to. I am in a lot of pain and medicine makes me drowsy.

Nara - As a Brown Disabled Woman, I often feel that I cannot talk about my experiences. My mixed media artwork demonstrates how I feel daily because of my intersectional experiences. The bright colours represent the excitement in life. The darker colours are the feeling of emptiness and loneliness due to societal barriers. The tears and the swirly lines on my face exhibit that I have a lot to say and I’m ready to say it all!

Alan - Exclusion. I feel excluded as I cannot hear what is being said due to my hearing loss so I back away from conversation.

Charlet- This self portrait highlights that the impact of rumination caused by a mental health condition/neurodivergence can be chaotic but also colourful.

Nurton - on the shores of dreams. My disability makes swimming like navigating a very deep sea. I am unable to look down the edge as my disability causes me to experience vertigo.

Amelia - I am more than my health condition. When i accept it, joy comes out and I can embrace the things I care about.

The government assert that the Timms review– named after the Minister of State for Social Security and Disability, Stephen Timms – is an attempt to ensure that PIP ‘is fair and fit for the future in a changing world’ and ‘helps support Disabled people to achieve better health, higher living standards, and greater independence, including through employment.’ The Review’s Call for Evidence closed on 28 May, and you can read our submission on our website. July is Disabled Pride month. To celebrate, we will be creating self portraits with a focus on our identities. We will be experimenting with a range of different materials to express how we feel. Come along on 8th July 1-3pm and please RSVP by the 1st July.

Our work shows us that Disabled people who find it difficult or impossible to use the internet are having an increasingly hard time accessing the information, services and support that they need. This year, we’re focusing on solutions. We’ll keep you updated.
